Buster Murdaugh testified for the defense that his family had been close and that Alex appeared devastated after the murders of Maggie and Paul. He described the phone call in which his father told him they had been shot, saying Alex sounded strange and later appeared completely broken when Buster arrived at Moselle. Buster also testified about the family’s routines, firearms, properties and phone calls, while helping the defense present Alex as a grieving husband and father rather than the killer prosecutors described. On cross-examination, however, prosecutors used Buster to revisit the timeline and Alex’s statements, including his repeated claim that “they did them so bad,” and to reinforce that Alex had lied about being at the kennels shortly before the murders.

John Marvin Murdaugh, Alex’s brother, similarly testified that Alex was extraordinarily distraught after the killings and said he could hardly describe how devastated his brother appeared. He also gave emotional testimony about returning to the kennels the following morning and personally cleaning Paul’s remains from the scene because he felt he owed it to his nephew, calling it one of the hardest things he had ever done. John Marvin also described helping locate Maggie’s missing cellphone after Buster used the Find My iPhone feature to identify its location roughly half a mile from Moselle. Both men were called by the defense to humanize Alex and challenge the prosecution’s portrayal of his behavior after the murders, but their testimony also underscored just how closely the family became involved in the immediate aftermath of the crime.
