For a year, Caleb Flynn told his girlfriend he hated his wife and was going to leave her. Then he put a condition on it, and that condition is the part of the Caleb Flynn trial texts that tells you exactly who he is. Tony reads the message and then explains the year that led up to it.The messages came from thirty-four binders the state put in front of the jury, read aloud by Alleigha Botner, the woman he sent them to. Tony lays out the playbook in his own words. He took away Ashley Flynn's name and replaced it with a nickname. He typed "I hate her" dozens of times, and once explained why: "That's why I constantly tell you I hate her." He wrote his most famous line, the one about killing her and not going to hell, as an apology for going to his daughter's birthday party. When his girlfriend doubted him, he wrote "I'm sorry your mind is going to these places."The death talk climbed all year. "I need her to die, to cheat again, to leave" in February. "Please hire someone" in June. By July his girlfriend was typing "I want to kill her, Caleb," and he wrote back "That makes two of us." In August she told him in writing not to take Ashley's life, and his reply was "I'll work on getting rid of her."Then the part that held it all together. He couldn't leave his wife, so he made his girlfriend prove her love instead, and the test he chose cost her nothing. He wrote "I'm not trying to manipulate you" in the same message.Ashley Flynn was shot twice in the head in her own bed on February 16, 2026. Prosecutors say her husband did it and staged a burglary; his lawyers say an intruder did it and the texts were lies to keep his girlfriend happy. Bryan Kohberger studied criminology at the doctoral level, and his own defense team told a judge they needed outside help getting through to him. That's in a sealed May 2025 filing, unsealed on September 22, 2026, that his new attorney, Greg Rauch, is using to challenge the guilty plea. Anne Taylor's team wrote that Kohberger was having difficulty comprehending adverse rulings and fitting them into a rational assessment of his case. In the same filing, they expressly denied he was incompetent. Judge Steven Hippler refused to delay the case on June 26, 2025, and Kohberger pleaded guilty six days later to killing four University of Idaho students. More than 107,000 messages between Caleb Flynn and Alleigha Botner became a spreadsheet, a timeline, and ultimately a series of numbers the prosecution wants jurors to remember.Ohio BCI criminal intelligence analyst Samantha Reeb testified that she helped preserve digital data, analyze information returned through search warrants, and build a timeline of communications in the investigation into the death of Ashley Flynn.Reeb testified that an Instagram account using the false name “Derrick Hammond” was created by Caleb Flynn’s phone and used to monitor and message Botner.Then she broke down the communications by subject matter.According to Reeb’s analysis, 141 messages referenced Caleb wanting to kill Ashley, while another 95 referenced hating her. She identified 188 messages involving discussion about deleting digital data. The overall volume of communication dropped dramatically in January before Flynn and Botner resumed talking on February 14.Reeb testified there were 266 communications from February 14 into February 15. From roughly 4 p.m. February 15 through February 16, she counted 716 communications.She also testified that GroupMe was deleted from Flynn’s phone at approximately 1 a.m. February 16, with Instagram deleted around the same time.Flynn has pleaded not guilty to charges in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. Prosecutors allege he killed Ashley and staged the scene as a home invasion. His defense maintains an intruder killed her and investigators wrongly focused on Caleb.The prosecution has spent days showing jurors individual messages. His own theory allegedly didn’t match the physical evidence.Flynn said he fell asleep by 11:30 p.m. Prosecutors presented Apple Watch data showing Ashley’s watch allegedly recorded activity between approximately 1:19 a.m. and 2:28 a.m. Flynn called 911 at approximately 2:30 a.m.Then Flynn volunteered something nobody asked about — a handgun in his truck. The weapon that allegedly killed Ashley has never been recovered. Flynn couldn’t describe the gun he admits he owned.Before anyone accused him, Flynn told Morgan it felt like they were pointing at him. He denied laying a hand on Ashley. Cross-examination of Det. Sgt. Mike Morgan turned from what Tipp City police investigated in Ashley Flynn’s murder to what they didn’t.The defense pressed Morgan about moments where the interview video appeared not to line up with its audio. Then the questions moved to physical evidence. Morgan testified that investigators found no evidence of blood on Caleb Flynn’s clothing or in the sinks of the home.Caleb also was never tested for gunshot residue.Asked why, Morgan said investigators didn’t want to rush to judgment and take Caleb into custody at that point.
