Summer by Christina Rossetti Winter is cold-hearted,   Spring is yea and nay, Autumn is a weathercock   Blown every way: Summer days for me   When every leaf is on its tree; When Robin's not a beggar,   And Jenny Wren's a bride, And larks hang singing, singing, singing,   Over the wheat-fields wide,   And anchored lilies ride, And the pendulum spider   Swings from side to side, And blue-black beetles transact business,   And gnats fly in a host, And furry caterpillars hasten   That no time be lost, And moths grow fat and thrive, And ladybirds arrive. Before green apples blush,   Before green nuts embrown, Why, one day in the country   Is worth a month in town;   Is worth a day and a year Of the dusty, musty, lag-last fashion   That days drone elsewhere.

On the Move by Thom Gunn The blue jay scuffling in the bushes follows Some hidden purpose, and the gust of birds That spurts across the field, the wheeling swallows, Has nested in the trees and undergrowth. Seeking their instinct, or their poise, or both, One moves with an uncertain violence Under the dust thrown by a baffled sense Or the dull thunder of approximate words.   On motorcycles, up the road, they come: Small, black, as flies hanging in heat, the Boys, Until the distance throws them forth, their hum Bulges to thunder held by calf and thigh. In goggles, donned impersonality, In gleaming jackets trophied with the dust, They strap in doubt – by hiding it, robust – And almost hear a meaning in their noise.   Exact conclusion of their hardiness Has no shape yet, but from known whereabouts They ride, direction where the tyres press. They scare a flight of birds across the field: Much that is natural, to the will must yield. Men manufacture both machine and soul, And use what they imperfectly control To dare a future from the taken routes.   It is a part solution, after all. One is not necessarily discord On earth; or damned because, half animal, One lacks direct instinct, because one wakes Afloat on movement that divides and breaks. One joins the movement in a valueless world, Choosing it, till, both hurler and the hurled, One moves as well, always toward, toward.   A minute holds them, who have come to go: The self-defined, astride the created will They burst away; the towns they travel through Are home for neither bird nor holiness, For birds and saints complete their purposes. I remember Adlestrop— The name, because one afternoon Of heat the express-train drew up there Unwontedly. It was late June.   The steam hissed. Someone cleared his throat. No one left and no one came On the bare platform. What I saw Was Adlestrop—only the name   And willows, willow-herb, and grass, And meadowsweet, and haycocks dry, No whit less still and lonely fair Than the high cloudlets in the sky.   And for that minute a blackbird sang Close by, and round him, mistier, Farther and farther, all the birds Of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire.

The Lonely Hunter by William Sharp Green branches, green branches, I see you         beckon; I follow! Sweet is the place you guard, there in the         rowan-tree hollow. There he lies in the darkness, under the frail         white flowers, Heedless at last, in the silence, of these sweet         midsummer hours. But sweeter, it may be, the moss whereon he         is sleeping now, And sweeter the fragrant flowers that may         crown his moon-white brow: And sweeter the shady place deep in an Eden         hollow Wherein he dreams I am with him---and,         dreaming, whispers, "Follow!" Green wind from the green-gold branches,         what is the song you bring? What are all songs for me, now, who no more         care to sing? Deep in the heart of Summer, sweet is life to         me still, But my heart is a lonely hunter that hunts on         a lonely hill. Green is that hill and lonely, set far in a         shadowy place; White is the hunter's quarry, a lost-loved hu-         man face: O hunting heart, shall you find it, with arrow         of failing breath, Led o'er a green hill lonely by the shadowy         hound of Death? Green branches, green branches, you sing of         a sorrow olden, But now it is midsummer weather, earth-         young, sunripe, golden: Here I stand and I wait, here in the rowan-         tree hollow, But never a green leaf whispers, "Follow, oh,         Follow, Follow!" Summer Sun  by Robert Louis Stevenson Great is the sun, and wide he goes Through empty heaven without repose; And in the blue and glowing days More thick than rain he showers his rays. Though closer still the blinds we pull To keep the shady parlour cool, Yet he will find a chink or two To slip his golden fingers through. The dusty attic spider-clad, He, through the keyhole, maketh glad; And through the broken edge of tiles, Into the laddered hay-loft smiles. Meantime his golden face around He bares to all the garden ground, And sheds a warm and glittering look Among the ivy's inmost nook. Above the hills, along the blue, Round the bright air with footing true, To please the child, to paint the rose, The gardener of the World, he goes.  

For this fifteenth season of the Well Read Poem, we are reading six poems in translation, written by a variety of ancient and modern poets. We hope that our discussion of these poems will be both interesting and instructive to anyone with an interest in literary translation as an art, and that it will serve to introduce you to a few poets whose acquaintance you have yet to make.   Today's poem is “Happy the Man, Who Like Ulysses” by Joachim du Bellay translated by Richard Wilbur.
