089: Balancing Fitness and Motherhood with Courtney Alcala

    41:02

Hi friends! Today I’m chatting with Courtney Alcala all about balancing fitness and motherhood. It can be tricky to do all the things, but she has some great tips and insight.  Here’s what we talk about: - Balancing a corporate career, training, and life as a mom (her baby is 5 months old) - Her background in health and fitness - Behind the scenes of the bikini competition world  and so much more. Here’s a bit more about Courtney:  Courtney received a double dose of determination and grit growing up as an Army brat. The child of an intelligence analyst and a Green Beret, she learned how to assimilate, make friends quickly, and do things that were uncomfortable at a young age. In her youth, she was very involved with youth group, showing horses, dance team, competitive canoe racing, and salsa dancing.  Courtney’s mission is to build and nurture a fitness community of busy bee women who desire support in balancing their wellness goals with their career and family obligations. She works full-time as a traveling clinical research monitor, and remotely as a fitness coach/community leader. Courtney is a signed fitness model and winner of the 2020 Arnold Classic Model Search, which led to her first magazine cover. She has experience teaching a multitude of GX classes (Pilates, boot camp, body bar, barre, cardio dance, salsa, bachata, cha cha); summits; seminars; and opening gyms.   Courtney is an ACE certified personal trainer and holds her M.S. in Health Education. Her dedication to provide quality education to her clients has led her to work with renowned athletes and athletic trainers.  Courtney and her husband welcomed their first baby into the world in May of 2021. She looks forward to leading her first STRONGCAMP postpartum in Spring of 2022, and is currently working with groups of women in her Fitness App to help them fit "fitness" into their busy lives.  You can connect with Courtney on her Instagram. 084: Healthy eating with The Sorority Nutritionist Lauren Hubert, RD

    38:45

I’m so excited to have Lauren Hubert, RD on the show this morning, chatting about her healthy eating and lifestyle tips. Here’s what we talk about: - Her background and what inspired her to become a Registered Dietitian - Her thoughts on trend diets, like Intermittent Fasting and Keto - Her go-to healthy eats and snacks - Her nutrition philosophy - Tips for maintaining weight loss and so.much.more.     Here’s a little bit more about Lauren: Lauren is changing the way we talk about weight loss. After gaining nearly 20 pounds as a freshman, Lauren was left struggling with her self-confidence and insecure. Determined to lose the weight, she began running for hours every day and cutting out calories from her diet, leading her to being super restrictive with her food choices and even scared to grab a drink with her sorority sisters. It wasn’t until she began studying nutrition that she realized her diet was a hot mess express and she was going about eating/exercising all wrong! Now as a Registered Dietitian, Lauren is passionate about teaching you to fuel your body for lasting and balanced weight loss. Her goal in the weight loss space is to not only inspire women to lose weight in a balanced and fun way, but to also make sure no woman feels guilty about wanting to be HOT, healthy, and successful.  You can connect with Lauren on her Instagram here and check out her podcast here. 083: The Emotional Entrepreneur with Scout Sobel

    31:49

I’m so excited for this week’s episode because I had the opportunity to interview a brilliant and knowledgeable gal that I’ve known in the online space for over a year now. Scout Sobel is the founder of Scout’s Agency, and they’ve been the source of many of the amazing guests you’ve heard on my show. Scout has a long journey with mental health, and I’m so thankful that she’s talking about the mental aspects of entrepreneurship and tips for self care. You can check out her new book here!     083: The Emotional Entrepreneur with Scout Sobel   Here’s what we chat about in this episode:   Scout's journey of managing her bipolar disorder - medication, daily healing practices, mindset shifts, holistic healing measures, and mental health tools   How to feel safe in your emotions so that you can have a purposeful, meaningful, and fulfilling relationship with your life   Business:How to emotionally handle entrepreneurship - the mindset, perspective shifts, and roller coaster reality that comes with being an entrepreneur   Why and how every entrepreneur should be prioritizing their mental health   The secrets behind Scout's Agency: crafting an engaging pitch letter, the art of cold emailing, and scoring high profile clients and so much more.   Here’s a little bit more about Scout Sobel:   Scout experienced her first depressive episode at the age of 14 and was formally diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 20. Living with a mental illness brought an onslaught of symptoms: anxiety, hypomania, depression, catatonia, psychosis, and suicidal ideation. Her perception of her life weighed down on her so poignantly that she dropped out of college, could not hold a job or internship, was hospitalized, experimented with medleys of prescription medication, and went through two outpatient programs.  One day her husband (then boyfriend) looked at her lovingly and said, “I don’t care if you’re depressed. If you are depressed and hopeful, I can be in this relationship. If you are depressed and hopeless, I can’t do this with you.”  That was the moment her life changed. She started infusing her life with hope and began to take radical responsibility for her emotional state. And after intense self-development work - support groups, holistic healing modalities, prayer, routines, and physical wellness, she found entrepreneurship. Through entrepreneurship, she learned to unconditionally love her life through the pain, challenges, and celebrations. She learned that she wanted to be here.  Today, Scout is the Founder and CEO of Scout's Agency, a female-focused PR agency that specializes in getting women as guests on podcasts. Over the last two years, the agency has served women like Catt Sadler, Kelley Baker, Jessica Zweig, Damona Hoffman, Lauren McGoodwin, Bala, Kelley Baker, and Rebecca Minkoff. Scout led the agency to a six figure revenue in its first year (2019) with a 250% growth in 2020. She is also the co-host of Okay Sis, a top-charted podcast most recently highlighted in Apple's New & Noteworthy collection, with her sister Mady where she openly documents her experience living with bipolar disorder.   And now that she has gotten to a place where she feels safe in her emotions and is not able to only function in society but thrive as an entrepreneur, she is putting all of her emotional tools, learnings, and wisdom into her debut book, The Emotional Entrepreneur, a 25 lesson emotional guidebook for women who want to pursue a life of purpose. These are the personal development tools she has garnered up to manage her mental illness but what surprised her the most is that she realized her mental health tools also became her superpower in business.   The Emotional Entrepreneur launched this week and you can get your copy here! Connect with Scout on Instagram and check out her podcasts, Ok Sis and SCOUT.     Resources from this episode:  Get 15% off Organifi with the code FITNESSISTA. 080: Five Fun Things

    14:18

Hi friends! Happy humpday! The Summer Shape Up plan goes out on Friday, so if you’re not on the list, add yourself here! It’s going to be so much fun and the party starts on Tuesday. I can’t wait to get started! For today’s podcast episode, I’m sharing 5 fun things. Some of them have to do with health and fitness and others are just things I’ve found that are bringing me joy. I’ll be posting more short podcast episodes in the mix with the longer beefy interviews, so please let me know what you think and also if you have any topic requests!  080: 5 Fun Things 1. Amazon long-lined sports bra.  I saw someone on Instagram recommend these and since they’re only $21.99, I decided to give it a whirl. I was blown away by the super soft fabric and quality; they remind me so much of the lululemon Align material. I’ve bought two more and am obsessed. They have a bit of padding, they have good coverage, and I love wearing these to barre or yoga classes. For the price, it’s a total steal, and they have 33,000 4 1/2-star reviews.  2. Squatty potty This is a weird thing, but since I’ve used and loved it for about 4 years now, I figured it deserved a proper shout out. I think it’s easy to forget bathroom mechanics because what we do here in the US is pretty unnatural to how our bodies were designed. Our positioning on a regular toilet causes extra pressure on our pelvic floor, and ya’ll know how passionate I am about small actions to protect our pelvic floor over time. This is such an easy swap and it ended up being such a helpful tool that both of our upstairs bathrooms have one. (It’s also one of those things that I’ve bought that the Pilot has asked zero questions about. I still don’t know if he knows what it is lol.) Highly recommend! (Plus the kids’ version is adorable.) 3. HigherDOSE sauna blanket I’ve raved about this on the blog quite a few times but I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it on the podcast yet. I purchased this as an X-mas gift and have used it at least 2-3 times a week since then. I’m usually cold, so it feels amazing to get toasty, toasty, and sweat, particularly an hour or so before bed each night. This is a portable infrared sauna, so you have the same benefits of using a sauna, without the need to take up a ton of space. There are 9 settings (I alternate between 7 and 8) and you can roll it out and enjoy an audiobook or show while getting in an awesome sweat. Saunas can provide a variety of benefits, from reducing inflammation, promoting a healthy immune system, helping with muscle soreness, stabilizing blood sugar, and so much more. I feel amazing when I use it, it makes a huge difference in my skin tone and texture, and I sleep like a baby with super vivid dreams when I use my sauna blanket. I have a discount code for this one, too! If you use FITNESSISTA75 at checkout, you’ll get $75 off! 4. Thrive Market We’ve been fans of Thrive Market for years, and they keep adding more and more offerings to the website. I find that the prices are way better than Whole Foods and they carry a lot of the brands we know and love. (Some of my very favorite products are in this post!) Lately, we started adding clean wines to our shipments and LOVE them. If you’ve been wanting to try it ou, my link gets you 25% off your first purchase.  5. Watermelon sleeping mask Ok, so this is one of my favorite skincare products. It smells like a watermelon jolly rancher and makes your skin smell SO soft and smooth. The brand is Glow Recipe, and I’m usually impressed with their ingredients. I mix this in with some of my other favorite skincare products, but it always feels like a treat when I use this one.  So, tell me friends: what’s something that is brining you joy or making your life easier right now? Spread the word in the comments section - I always love to hear about your recommendations, too! Happy Wednesday :) xo Gina PS congrats to the winner of the 300k downloads giveaway, Kathy! (Winner has been emailed. Stay tuned for more giveaways soon!)
