Why are black cats still being overlooked? 🖤🐈‍⬛This week, it’s just the two of us back in the closet talking about some of our very favorite cats on the planet: BLACK CATS.Black cats have been surrounded by myths, superstitions and spooky stereotypes for centuries. And unfortunately, some of those old beliefs are still following them into animal shelters.Research has found that black cats experience lower adoption rates and poorer shelter outcomes than cats of other colors, and shelters around the country still report that black cats are often the ones who wait the longest for their forever homes. But why? We’ll dig into the history, the statistics, the Halloween myths and the strange psychology behind why coat color can influence the way people perceive a cat. And, of course, we’re also talking about why we think black cats are freaking AWESOME. Our own panthers are some of the first cats to greet people at the door, proving once again that you absolutely cannot judge a personality by the color of a coat.If you’ve ever loved a black cat, wanted to adopt one, or simply wondered why they continue to be overlooked, this one is for you.Let’s give black cats the appreciation they deserve. 🖤

What happens when a lifelong love for animals becomes a mission to make a difference? This week on Back in the Closet, we're getting a little personal! Adrienne is joined by her dear friend of 30 years, Leah, and over those three decades, they've both become bonafide CRAZY CAT LADIES! 😻Leah is now co-owner of Andrews Veterinary Hospital, where she and her wife, Chris, have made caring for animals a huge part of their lives. Between their own cats and dogs, fosters, and the countless animals they help through the clinic, their hearts (and homes!) are full of love for animals. But this week's conversation is about something especially close to their hearts.Kylie's Kitten Care Fund was created in loving memory of Chris's daughter, Kylie Roberto, whose life was tragically cut short at just 21 years old.In partnership with Andrews Veterinary Hospital and Valley River Humane Society, this beautiful initiative honors Kylie's kind heart by helping kittens in need and giving them a chance at a brighter future. We're sitting down with Leah and Chris to share the story behind this special mission, the lives they hope to touch, and how we can all be part of making a difference.Because sometimes, the most meaningful way to honor a life is to keep sharing the love that person brought into the world.Love Lives On Through Every Life Saved. ❤️Learn more about Kylie's Kitten Care Fund and how you can help: https://valleyriverhumanesociety.org/kitten-care-fund/

Is your cat suddenly freaking out, hiding, attacking, zooming through the house, or acting completely overstimulated? This week, we’re Back in the Closet with our favorite cat behaviorist, Linda Brown, talking about how to calm your cat down and, more importantly, how to understand what’s causing all that big behavior in the first place.Because when a cat seems “crazy,” aggressive, anxious or totally wound up, there’s usually a reason. We’re digging into what can cause cats to become overstimulated or stressed, how to recognize the signs before things escalate, what you should (and shouldn’t) do in the moment, and simple ways to help your cat feel safer and more settled at home.Whether your cat struggles with fear, overstimulation, sudden bursts of aggression, stressful situations or just seems to go from 0 to 100 in seconds, this conversation will help you better understand what they’re trying to tell you.Because calming your cat isn’t about controlling their behavior. It’s about understanding it. ❤️Check out Linda Brown, The Cat Behaviorist, here: https://www.thecatbehaviorist.com/

Could something in your cat’s food be contributing to issues you’ve been trying to figure out? This week for Stuff We Love September, we’re sitting down with our good friend Carrie Hyde, owner of NutriScan, to talk about an at-home testing option that many cat parents don’t even know exists.NutriScan is a saliva-based food intolerance and sensitivity test for dogs, cats, and horses, originally developed and patented by renowned veterinarian and researcher Dr. W. Jean Dodds. The test looks at IgA and IgM antibodies in saliva to evaluate reactions to common food ingredients. Now, Dr. Dodds has entrusted NutriScan to Carrie Hyde, and we couldn’t be more excited to introduce Carrie and this resource to our cat community. In this episode, we talk about:• What food sensitivities and intolerances can look like in cats• The difference between a food sensitivity, intolerance, and true food allergy• How NutriScan’s at-home saliva test works• Why figuring out which foods your individual cat responds to can be so challenging• How testing may provide another piece of information when you’re trying to get to the root of ongoing issues• When at-home testing can be useful and when your cat absolutely needs veterinary care• The story behind NutriScan and why Dr. Jean Dodds chose Carrie to carry it forwardWe’re big believers in having more tools in the toolbox when it comes to understanding our cats. What if we told you there’s a naturally occurring compound that has been researched for more than 70 years, with an impressive body of published scientific literature behind it... and most cat parents have never even heard of it?It’s called PEA (palmitoylethanolamide), and this week we’re diving into the science with one of the most respected voices in integrative veterinary medicine, Dr. Judy Morgan.PEA isn’t a new wellness trend. Research into this fascinating fatty-acid compound dates back to the 1950s, and scientists continue to study its role in the body, including its relationship with normal inflammatory responses, cellular signaling, mast cells, the nervous system, and the endocannabinoid system. So what exactly is PEA? How does it work within the body? What has decades of research taught us about it? And why are more pet parents and integrative veterinarians becoming interested in its potential role in supporting normal comfort, mobility, and overall wellness? Join the podcast to find out!

We’re kicking off Stuff We Love September with something we talk about ALL the time... hydration! 💧🐱Cats are naturally designed to get much of their moisture from their food, but the reality is that many cats today eat dry or mixed diets and simply don’t take in enough water on their own.So what if there was an easy (and delicious) way to help bridge that hydration gap?In this episode, we’re joined by Sarah Zieman, creator of Cat Years, to talk about what led her to take a closer look at feline hydration and ultimately create a lickable treat specifically designed to help cats get more moisture into their day.And she didn’t stop at creating the product. Sarah brought scientists into the process to actually study feline hydration and put the product to the test. We’re talking about:💧 Why cats can be so challenging to keep properly hydrated🐱 What Sarah learned about cats eating wet, dry and mixed diets🔬 How the research came together and what the scientists discovered🥩 How the ingredients are selected and sourced😻 What makes Cat Years different from your average lickable treat❤️ And why small, simple changes to your cat’s daily routine can make a differenceIf you’ve ever wondered whether your cat is really drinking enough water, this conversation is for you.Because when it comes to feline hydration, sometimes we need to think beyond the water bowl.Get your Cat Years here: https://catyears.com/
