In this first English episode of Filosofisk podcast, Peter Singer and Torbjörn Tännsjö join us for a discussion about utilitarianism. Questions addressed include using utilitarianism in decision-making, the moral weight of suffering, and the ethics of disability. The guests’ philosophical recommendations: “The Repugnant Conclusion” on Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, written by Gustaf Arrhenius, Jesper Ryberg, and Torbjörn Tännsjö (https://plato.stanford.edu/archives/spr2017/entries/repugnant-conclusion/); ethical issues concerning animal welfare, the value of biodiversity, and the long-term future; “The Precipice: Existential Risk and the Future of Humanity”, a book written by Toby Ord. Filosofisk podcast publishes philosophical discussions (usually in Swedish, but sometimes in English) with invited guests. The hosts are Stina Björkholm, Olle Risberg, and Nils Sylvan.
