Why did I want to talk with Gene Bowen & Jack Bookbinder? I am blown away by the work they and their Road Recovery staff do to mentor youth facing life challenges such as drugs, gangs, violence, abusive home environments, and economic challenges. Gene & Jack met through their work in the music industry and both worked with the late Jack Buckley who lost his life in a drowning accident. Gene & Jack have both faced their own challenges, notably, Gene speaks openly about his past addiction issues, and Jack has struggled with diabetes for many years. They share how learning to develop a better way of living led to the creation of Road Recovery. Road Recovery is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people battle adversities and faces their struggles while teaching them comprehensive life skills.  The organization started from The Golden Promise passage written and read by Mary Guibert, Jeff Buckley’s mother at his memorial. From that promise, in 1998 Mary Guibert made a pledge that she would help launch and develop Road Recovery with its founders Gene Bowen (Buckley’s tour manager) and Jack Bookbinder (formerly part of Buckley’s artist management team).  Mentored by entertainment industry professionals who have confronted similar life struggles, and with support from the mental health field, Road Recovery’s action-driven programs offer “all access” opportunities for young people to engage in the process of creating, planning, and presenting their own live performance events and studio recording projects. Gene and Jack have been running Road Recovery ever since and the organization is celebrating its 25th Anniversary this year.  For more on Road Recovery: https://roadrecovery.org/ This is Gene Bowen and Jack Bookbinder Knockin' Doorz Down.
