Néstor Isidro Pérez Salas, known as "Nini" or "El 19," was a senior security leader for the Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa Cartel, led by the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. He directed a group of armed enforcers responsible for protecting the cartel's operations and engaging in violent acts to intimidate and eliminate rivals and law enforcement officials.Pérez Salas was arrested in Culiacán, Mexico, on November 22, 2023, and extradited to the United States on May 25, 2024. He faces charges in two U.S. jurisdictions. In the District of Columbia, he is charged with importing cocaine and methamphetamine, firearms offenses, and conspiracy to obstruct justice through murder. In the Southern District of New York, he is accused of leading a continuing criminal enterprise that resulted in multiple deaths, including a DEA informant, as well as charges related to fentanyl trafficking, kidnapping, and money laundering​.The allegations against Pérez Salas include his involvement in the torture and killing of Mexican federal law enforcement officers, members of the Los Zetas cartel, and a witness and informant. Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie were a young couple who gained widespread media attention in 2021 due to the tragic circumstances surrounding Gabby's disappearance and death. Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old aspiring social media influencer, and Brian Laundrie, her 23-year-old fiancé, embarked on a cross-country road trip in a van, documenting their journey on social media.The trip took a dark turn when Gabby Petito was reported missing on September 11, 2021, after her family lost contact with her. She was last seen in Wyoming's Grand Teton National Park in late August. Brian Laundrie returned to his parents' home in Florida without Gabby on September 1, driving the van they had been traveling in. He did not provide any information on Gabby's whereabouts and subsequently refused to cooperate with the investigation.Gabby's remains were discovered on September 19, 2021, in Bridger-Teton National Forest in Wyoming. Her death was ruled a homicide by manual strangulation. Following her disappearance and the discovery of her body, Brian Laundrie became the prime suspect. A massive manhunt ensued, and his remains were eventually found on October 20, 2021, in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park in Florida.
