This division of labor is typical for me these days. And as my iPhone usage increases, so does my time with the Photos app, both on the Mac and the iOS version. Not only does it automatically back up my images to iCloud and share them across all of my devices, but it is also a flexible editor. You may wrinkle your brow at that statement, but consider this: If you had an app that combined Apple technology with Luminar Neo, ON1 Effects, and RAW Power, you'd probably be a pretty happy camper. That's exactly how my Photos app on the Mac is set up. Via its Editing Extensions framework, I seamlessly move between all of these technologies within the Photos app itself. This gives me access to a variety of AI technologies, layers, filters, film effects, and more. Many photographers don't realize that this ecosystem not only supports their iPhone pictures, but the images from their interchangeable lens cameras too. Then add Apple's LookUp technology, object recognition, and more, and there's a ton of sophistication presented in a user friendly interface. We're to the point, in my opinion, where it's time for an online workshop dedicated to learning all of these features. This is The Digital Story Podcast #996, April 22, 2025. Today's theme is, "Night and Twilight Photography." I'm Derrick Story. Opening Monologue Daylight is great. The bulk of my photography happens when the sun is shining. That's also true for everyone else, however. So when I want to create something that's unique, and eye-catching, I wait for the sun to dip below the horizon. That's when the drama begins. I share some of my favorite tips for night and twilight photography on this week's TDS Photography Podcast. I hope you enjoy the show. Digital Photography Podcast 996 Tune-In Via Your Favorite Podcast App! Apple Podcasts -- Spotify Podcasts -- Stitcher Podbean Podcasts -- Podbay FM -- Tune In Night and Twilight Photography For night photography I use both my iPhone 15 Pro Max and the OM System OM-3. All smartphones these days have a variety of night modes that are effective. So in that sense, brand doesn't matter much. Night Photography with the iPhone The iPhone will detect with the ambient light is low enough to require Night Mode, and will let you know its status in the upper left hand corner. As smart as the device is, you still want to hold the camera very steady during exposure. I often lean against a wall, use a hand railing, etc. to ensure the best quality possible. Once you have the capture, there are two common issues to address. The first is color. Night photography often involves mixed lighting situations that can yield some very garish results. I like to harmonize those colors using Selective Color in the Photos App or HSL in other editors. You can shift hues, brighten and darken colors, and tweak their saturation to harmonize your color palette. I've also found that LUTs are very useful for taming difficult color challenges. Many apps such as RAW Power, Nitro, Photomator, ON1 Effects, and Luminar support LUTs and include a good variety with the software. The next thing I often address is what I call digital over sharpening. I think this is a result of the computational photography required to get the exposure in the first place. One of my favorite tools to combat digital over sharpening is the Orton Effect tool in Luminar Neo. Go to Edit > Glow, then choose Orton Effect in the submenu. Be sure to turn on Advance Settings to control softness, brightness, and warmth of the effect. Aside from being a terrific standalone app, Luminar is a powerful editing extension for Photos as well. The Orton Effect does a great job of counteracting digital over sharpening giving your night shots that magical look. Twilight Photography My favorite post-sunset shots are often while there's still color in the sky. I like the oranges and blues. And a great technique this time of evening is to work with silhouettes. For example, if you're in a popular place where folks are photographing the sunsets, such as Hawaii, step back from the crowd and get the people, trees, and other objects silhouetted against the colorful sky. It's often a far more interesting picture. Combining Live Photo and Night Mode This is a great technique if you have water in the scene. I combine Night Mode with Live View Long Exposure. Make sure Live View is turned on in the Camera App for the iPhone, then in Photos, choose Long Exposure from the Live menu. The effect can be quite impressive, especially considering that this is a handheld long exposure at night. Then apply the color correcting techniques I discussed earlier, plus a little Orton Effect, and you'll have a real winner. Live Composite on Olympus Cameras Live Composite is a high-tech version of Bulb mode, where the shutter stays open for an extended period of time, but you can watch the picture unfold before your eyes on the camera's LCD screen. This is particularly nice when you have moving lights in the scene. Begin by setting the camera to Bulb Mode. Then you can navigate to Live Composite. On the OM-3 you use the rear dial. Make sure the camera is steady, set your parameters, and watch the magic appear. Opening Monologue Dateline: Sunday, 2pm, outdoor ceremony on a cloudless day. To say that it was bright outside would be an understatement. The sun was beaming in at an angle. Those sitting in the audience could dawn hats and sunglasses. Those at the alter could not. This is what separates iPhone snap shooters from event photographers. For years wedding photography was my primary source of business revenue. Every season I would bring on a second shooter to make sure I covered all the bases. One year I brought on a very capable photographer, one who has gone on to a successful career. But we ran into a problem; she did not like using fill flash for events. She was a natural light only photographer. I was able to persuade her to use the flash for the gigs that she worked with me. But she didn't like it. I compromised by agreeing that she only had to use the fill light in situations that would otherwise be compromised by harsh natural light. I thought her work with the flash was quite good. But after one season, we parted so she could pursue other opportunities. I wish she would have let me work with her more on fill flash photography. Because in my view, when done properly, it has a very natural look. Since that time, I've read others who are adamant about not using fill flash. I smile and think of my friend who worked one season with me. And I say to myself, "If only they would let me show them how..." Fast forward to Sunday's wedding. I wanted to use the Nikon Zf. This would be the first time I've chosen this camera for a major event. But it's been such a joy to work with, I wanted to see what we could do together. Since I hadn't used it for events, I didn't have a serious flash for it. I decided to purchase the NEEWER Z1-N TTL Round Head Flash Speedlite for Nikon with Magnetic Dome Diffuser. I liked it because it was affordable ($169), powerful (76 watts) and had a big battery (2600mAh rechargeable lithium). I made a good call. That flash on the Nikon Zf served me well in every lighting condition. The first big test was the outdoor ceremony bright sunlight. The contrast was amazing! The Zf was flash sync up to 1/200th of a second. So I set it in Program mode with flash on A-TTL and made a couple test shots. After reviewing them, I dialed back Flash Exposure Compensation to -1.3. The fill light was powerful enough to even out the contrast, but stayed balanced with the background. The shots look great. Next came the group shots. I found a great spot in a stand of Redwoods with mild backlighting. I dialed back Flash Exposure to -1.6 and turned on the Skin Softening filter built-in to the Zf, set to the lowest level. Picture Control was set to Auto. Everything else remained in Program exposure and I-TTL for the flash. Beautiful! Finally, the reception. Now I switched to Manual Exposure, 1/30th at f/5.6 and set the flash to -1.0. This provided beautifully exposed backdrops for all of the events such as first dance and cake cutting. Once again, fantastic. I had purchased a second lithium battery for the flash and switched them out at the beginning of the reception. I did the same with the battery for the Nikon. That got me through the entire event. I did so some natural light photography, such as for the flowers, food, and a few window-lit portraits. But everything else had some level of fill light. The illumination emitted from the Neewer Z1-N round head was quite pleasing for people shots. I used the included magnetic dome diffuser the entire time because it was quite friendly to skin tones. The 5600K color temperature wasn't too cool, especially when matched with Nikon's excellent Auto White Balance A1 (to keep overall atmosphere). And the powerful lithium battery provided fast recycling time and long life. The flash and the Nikon worked together in beautiful harmony. I'll be handing over the entire shoot to the bride and groom by the end of this week. I know they'll love them because I was sharing pictures on the back of the Nikon's LCD all during the reception. Theresa, my wife, was the officiant for the ceremony. She was looking over my shoulder last night while I was sorting the pictures. She said, "I usually don't like pictures of myself, but you really made me look good." I know she would have not said that if I insisted on shooting that ceremony with natural light only. And once again, I thought of my photographer friend from the past. PS: The Nikon Zf mirrorless is an awesome camera for event photography.
