Ayla Nereo - The Power of the Voice (#171)

0:00
1:03:39
Rewind 15 seconds
Fast Forward 15 seconds

Over the course of six studio albums, Ayla has cultivated her style by bucking industry norms and confidently coloring beyond the lines. The self-produced, full-length album Hollow Bone ushered in a global audience, as Ayla dramatically expanded her sonic palate on a series of groundbreaking records with folktronica duo Wildlight. 2016’s sophomore solo The Code of the Flowers and later By the Light of the Dark Moon furthered her artistic and spiritual trajectories into new musical territory.

Incorporating elements of Celtic melodies, pristine acoustic instrumentation, electronic flourishes, and ancient prose within hip-hop cadences, Nereo possesses an uncanny ability to disarm and crack open the heart. She sings to the depth of our humanness, for the protection of precious wild lands and all living creatures. Her ornate songs splash color across a multi-hued canvas of sound.

Often supported by her live band, Ayla Nereo toured the U.S. extensively in recent years; highlighted by four performances at the hallowed Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, as well as international plays in Europe, Australia, Canada, and Envision Festival in Costa Rica. In 2014, Nereo made headlines on the 33-city, nationwide Permaculture Action Tour with The Polish Ambassador. She’s also shared the stage with a diverse array of artists including  Mr. Lif, Rising Appalachia, Trevor Hall, Medicine for the People, Mike Love, and many others.

In addition to music, Ayla Nereo is a filmmaker, dancer, and environmentalist; she has committed herself to bettering the world through her art. She proves to be an activist artist across multiple fronts, partnering with non-profit TreeSisters, an organization that uses concert ticket proceeds to plant trees across the globe. Her song ‘Seeds’ was short-listed for an Oscar nomination (Best Original Song for a Documentary), while ‘Flicker’ was named 2020 Track of the Year in France’s Ziklibrenbib contest.

Their past debut album Cathedral City, released on New Amsterdam Records, was named one of 2010ʹs best classical albums by the New York Times, Time Out New York, the New Yorker and NPR. A well-seasoned pianist and synthesist, she has joined the Philip Glass Ensemble for a production of his new work for Shakespeare in the Park, has worked with composer Steve Reich, composer and visual artist Tristan Perich, Meredith Monk, Lukas Ligeti and other talented artists. Her recent keyboard performances include a premiere of a synthesizer concerto by composer William Brittelle and the Seattle Symphony Orchestra. Jeremy Narby - Plant Teachers, Ayahuasca and Tobacco (#180)

    1:05:59

Anthropologist Jeremy Narby first learned of the shamanic uses of ayahuasca and tobacco while conducting fieldwork in the Amazon region decades ago. After witnessing the transformative power of these mind-altering plants, Narby embarked on a quest to understand their effects on human consciousness. His search led him to contact Rafael Chanchari Pizuri, a traditional healer from the Peruvian Amazon. “The dose makes the poison,” says an old adage, reminding us that all substances have the potential to heal or to harm, depending on their use. This is especially true of tobacco. Although Western medicine treats it as a harmful addictive drug, tobacco is considered medicinal by indigenous people of the Amazon rainforest. In its unadulterated form, it holds a central place in their repertoire of traditional medicines. Along with the hallucinogen ayahuasca, tobacco forms a part of treatments designed to heal the body, stimulate the mind, and inspire the soul with visions. In Plant Teachers, Narby and Pizuri hold a cross-cultural dialogue that explores the similarities between ayahuasca and tobacco, the role of these plants in indigenous cultures, and the hidden truths they reveal about nature. Juxtaposing two distinct worldviews, Plant Teachers invites readers on a wide-ranging journey through anthropology, botany, and biochemistry, while raising tantalizing questions about the relationship between science and other ways of knowing.Plant Teachers on Amazon:    https://www.amazon.com/dp/1608687732

    Justin Wren - Overcoming (#179)

    1:13:30

Justin Wren knows what it's like to feel like the world is against you.  Like many kids, Justin was bullied as a teenager, but he had a dream that kept him going. Fueled by the anger he felt toward his tormentors, Justin pursued wrestling in high school where he became 10 time State Champion, 5 time All American, and 2 time National Champion.  Justin trained hard and this propelled his dream of becoming a UFC fighter into reality.  But the pain from his childhood didn't dissipate, and Justin fell into a spiral of depression and addiction that led him on a path toward destruction.  After he was kicked out of his training community, his career was in shambles and he had nowhere else to go so Justin attended a men's retreat.  It was there he found his faith and purpose for living. As Justin began piecing his life back together, he took several international trips. This led him to the Ituri rain forest in the Democratic Republic of the Congo where he came across the Mbuti Pygmies, a group of people persecuted by neighboring tribes and forced into slavery. On one of his trips he stayed for a year living among them and sharing the culture of what he calls "the most bullied people on earth." They gave him two names Efeosa which  means "the man who loves us" and Mbuti MangBO "The Big Pygmy." His encounter with the pygmies left him wondering who was there to help them, and in that moment Justin stepped out of the cage and into a Fight For The Forgotten. In 2015, after a five year hiatus from professional sports, Justin returned to his winning ways in MMA fighting, but now he is fighting for someone besides himself. Since returning to fighting, Justin is undefeated in three fights. His current record is 15-2.Justin is not only giving a voice to the pygmies through land, food and water  initiatives but, state-side, he is addressing the escalating problem of  bulling through an anti-bullying character development curriculum titled "Heroes in Waiting." He says, "Everyone can be a hero. To be a hero all that's required is to see a need and do what's right." The program aims to inspire students to take action at a moment of choice through empathy, kindness, compassion, courage and integrity.  https://fightfortheforgotten.org/

Robert Thurman - Friendly Facts for Wisdom & Bliss (#173)

    1:06:02

Bob is a charismatic speaker and author of many books on Tibet, Buddhism, art, politics and culture. His own search for enlightenment began while he was a university student at Harvard. After an accident in which he lost the use of an eye, Bob left school on a spiritual quest throughout Europe, the Middle East and Asia. He found his way to India, where he first saw His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1962. After learning Tibetan and studying Buddhism, Bob became a Tibetan Buddhist monk and the first Westerner to be ordained by the Dalai Lama. Some years later, however, he offered up his robes when he realized he could be more effective in the American equivalent of a monastery: the university, returning to Harvard to finish his PhD.  Time Magazine chose him as one of the 25 most influential Americans in 1997, describing him as a “larger than life scholar-activist destined to convey the Dharma, the precious teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, from Asia to America.”Bob is the founder and active president of Tibet House US, a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Tibetan culture, and of the American Institute of Buddhist Studies, a non-profit affiliated with the Center for Buddhist Studies at Columbia University and dedicated to the publication of translations of important artistic and scientific Tibetan treatises. As part of his long-term commitment to the Tibetan cause, at the request of H.H. the Dalai Lama, Bob co-founded Tibet House US in 1987 with Tenzin Tethong, Richard Gere, and Philip Glass, a non profit organization based in New York City and dedicated to the preservation and renaissance of Tibetan culture.Inspired by his longtime good friend the Dalai Lama, Bob takes us along with him into an expanded vision of the world through the prisma of Tibetan Buddhism. He shares with us the sense of refuge in the Dharma, which unfailingly helps us clear away the shrouds of fear and confusion, sustains us with the cheerfulness of an enriched present, and opens a door to a path of realistic hope for a peaceful, kind, and wise future. Learn more about Bob! - https://bobthurman.com/**Buy the new book "Wisdom Is Bliss" - https://www.amazon.com/Wisdom-Bliss-Friendly-Facts-Change-ebook/dp/B08WRWDFB6 New Music from East Forest! -"Possible" - the latest studio album  from East Forest - LISTEN NOW:Spotify / AppleOrder the album on vinyl - limited edition + check out the new Possible clothing: http://eastforest.org*** Support this free podcast by joining the East Forest COUNCIL on Patreon.  Monthly Zoom Council, Podcast exclusives, private Patreon live-stream ceremony, and more.  Check it out and a great way to support the podcast and directly support the work of East Forest! - http://patreon.com/eastforest*****Please rate Ten Laws w/East Forest on iTunes.  It helps us get the guests you want to hear. Tour - Catch East Forest LIVE - Pledge your interest in the upcoming East Forest Ceremony Concert events this Spring/Summer 2021.  More info and join us at eastforest.org/tourCommunity - Join the newsletter and be part of the East Forest Community.Meditation - Listen to East Forest guided meditations on Spotify & AppleRam Dass album - Check out the East Forest x Ram Dass album on (Spotify & Apple) + East Forest's Music For Mushrooms: A Soundtrack For The Psychedelic Practitioner 5hr album (Spotify & Apple).Socials -Stay in the East Forest flow:Mothership:  http://eastforest.org/IG:  https://www.instagram.com/eastforest/FB:  https://www.facebook.com/EastForestMusic/TW:  https://twitter.com/eastforestmusicJOIN THE COUNCIL - PATREON: http://patreon.com/eastforest
