FSU football: Midseason breakdown featuring Brendan Sonnone and Ingram Smith

    1:07:09

What would the bye week be without a little Triple Option check-in? You guys know what it is that we do and where you can find us. The Florida State football team didn’t have a game but that doesn’t stop us from taking the time to reflect on the first half of the season. Heck, we even did a little projecting on the games ahead towards the end. I won’t give the whole show away but we also spent a lot of time discussing Travis Hunter. Joining Kevin, Trey, and myself on the newest episode is Ingram Smith of the Nolecast and Brendan Sonnone of Noles247. Both gentlemen were gracious enough to come on and provide insight into the makings and screwups of the first half of the season. Is this program improving? Do we know the damage that occurred in the Jacksonville State game? How important is Travis Hunter to Mike Norvell’s future? These are really some of the key areas that we spent most of our time discussing. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

FSU football vs UNC Film Review: Is FSU on the right track?

    1:12:28

For two years in a row, the Florida State Seminoles have upset the North Carolina Tar Heels in football.  North Carolina raced out to a 10-0 lead but quickly lost hold of the initiative. From that point on they never felt like they got their feet back under them. FSU played measured, ball control football, and widdled UNC down for the rest of the game.  Much of FSU’s offensive production came off of a career day for quarterback Jordan Travis. He stayed patient in the passing game and took the reigns of the leader of the running game. The threat of his legs opened things up for FSU’s talented stable of running backs. Jashaun Corbin and Treshaun Ward received the carries that many fans had been clamoring for and took full advantage of them.  Defensively FSU seems to be getting better on a game-by-game basis. Coverage was tight throughout the game and the defensive front is continuing to prove to be one of the better fronts in the conference. They let UNC quarterback Sam Howell run for over 100 yards but ultimately Howell was unable to beat the Seminoles using his feet.  There was a lot of good in this game but even coaches can’t see everything on a single watch. So join the guys at the Triple Option as they rewatch one of the most complete games FSU has played in years. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

FSU beats UNC: Florida State football instant reaction

    30:09

The Florida State Seminoles defeated the North Carolina Tar Heels by a score of 35-25. The ‘Noles played one of the cleanest games of the season and looked like the more cohesive group throughout the game. They found a lot of their success on the ground. Quarterback Jordan Travis led the charge with 121 rushing yards on his own but runningbacks Jashaun Corbin and Treshaun Ward combined for another 129. On defense FSU held North Carolina’s talented quarterback Sam Howell in check for a majority of the game. UNC was forced to find success on the ground and ultimately couldn’t sustain their drives because of it. This game was a big potential stepping stone for this Florida State team. It was the most complete game they have played in Norvell's tenure and may give some confidence to the team moving forward. There was a lot to like and a lot to keep in mind for this game. Here to give their instant thoughts on tonight's performance are Kevin Little and Adam Brown. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

FSU vs UNC Preview: North Carolina Tar Heels Scouting Report

    6:55

Florida State Football looks to ride some momentum off of their sole victory of the season into Chapel Hill on Saturday to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels. Neither of these teams has lived up to expectations this year. This was supposed to be a breakout year for the Tar Heels. They have had some solid recruiting classes and looked to build off the past successes of coordinators Phil Longo and Jay Bateman. Compound that with the return of Heisman hopeful Sam Howell and many believed that UNC would make a run for the ACC title. That hasn’t been the case early in the season. Offense Features a lot of flexibility in their routes- there's even a rumor that there's a “get open” route in the playbook Simple reads and frequent deep shots allow Howell to showcase his strengths They lost a lot of playmakers which means that often these receivers struggle to get open Offensive line issues add to the problem which brings them towards the bottom of CFB in sacks allowed When Howell gets time it's an explosive and fun to watch offense Defense Base 3-4 Very aggressive- frequent one gapping which means the defensive line is upfield quickly Fire zone heavy- a fire zone is a 5 man pressure with a spot drop zone behind it If they get pressure they are a decent defense But if not they can struggle with underneath coverage Contain may be a problem. The mobile QB Jeff Sims for GT took advantage of their over-aggressiveness which led them to lose gap integrity. Conclusions It has been difficult to parse out this UNC team’s true colors. Much like FSU, it seems like any team can show up on any given Saturday. Because of that, this game is not quite the lock that it should be when considering the fact that UNC is a much better-coordinated team with an exceptional quarterback. A lot of these things are a bit difficult to get a mental image of so that’s why I provided some images myself. Let's dive into the film to get a better understanding of FSU’s matchup. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

Is FSU football turning a corner? Reviewing Seminoles win over Syracuse

    1:33:03

The Florida State Seminoles football team edged out their first victory of the season against the Syracuse Orange. FSU found themselves in the driver's seat for the first time all year. They got off to an early lead behind a stellar first-half defensive performance but could never gain the traction needed to separate themselves on the scoreboard. A nursed 10 point lead in the fourth quarter whittled away as Syracuse began to exploit some holes in FSU’s defense. However, FSU ultimately made the plays they needed to make to hold on to the win. This game is conflicting. It's a huge positive that FSU was able to hold on to their first victory of the season, but missed assignments and sloppy play still prevented an entire 60-minute performance. It’s clear that this team is still finding its identity. Some of these mistakes are hard to understand, so it helps to dive into the film and try to diagnose what actually happened. That's why we have the Triple Option team. Each and every week they go through and tell the tale of the tape. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

Can FSU football get its first win of the season vs. Louisville?

    6:07

Louisville Cardinals head coach Scott Satterfield is in the early stages of a pivotal year three. After a rocky 2020 season and some offseason hijinks, it was beginning to seem like neither Louisville nor Satterfield were entirely pleased with their present situation. The trend continued downward after a blowout loss to Ole Miss in week one. However, a big victory last Saturday over a solid UCF team may be the change in fortune the Cardinals need. A change that the Florida State Seminoles are desperately striving for as well. Offense Satterfield’s background is on the offensive side of the ball and his teams tend to reflect his style. They heavily rely on pistol sets that give flexibility while giving away minimal information pre-snap They base their offense off of stretch which gets the defense moving laterally Then they use misdirection PA or inside zones to take advantage of flowing defenders The key to their offense is quarterback Malik Cunningham who is a runner first but whose passing game continues to improve throughout his career. Defense Their defense tends to operate under one directive: stop the run. They play a one-gap 3-4 that allows quick upfield movement by the defensive line Their linebackers are aggressive in run fits and are heavily involved in the pass rush via stunts This aggressiveness can leave them a bit vulnerable to the passing game. Some of these concepts are a bit difficult to fully grasp on paper. So lets jump into the film to see what they look like on the field. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

FSU football recruiting: Where do the Seminoles stand?

    39:18

Entering week four of the season, a notch in the win column still eludes the Florida State Seminoles. Remarkably, though, their top-10 recruiting class has stayed intact. On this episode, the Three Stars discuss the recent public statements of support from various future ‘Noles, which members of Tribe 22 are firm in their commitments and which could be shaky, and how FSU’s recruiting pitch might evolve. They also dip into the mailbag to discuss which position group is most crucial for this cycle: offensive line, defensive line, or linebacker? The episode concludes with a breakdown on the scheduled official visitors for this weekend vs. the Louisville Cardinals. The Florida State of Recruiting (FSoR) Podcast features the Three Stars: Josh Pick, Tim Alumbaugh, and David Stout. And if you can’t get enough Florida State in your life, check out our “Everything Noles” podcast family, home of FSoR, Triple Option and more. Are the FSU football coaches in over their head?

    26:39

The Florida State Seminoles have gotten off to their first 0-3 start since Bobby Bowden’s first year behind the helm. The most recent addition to this inauspicious start was a loss to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons that never really felt within range.  Head Coach Mike Norvell and his staff are still searching for answers to how they can get this team back on track and the FSU fanbase as a whole has not been hesitant to supply advice.  After that performance, the coaches were bombarded with a litany of questions- some good and some not as good- asking them to explain some decisions made throughout the game. Luckily at Tomahawk Nation, we have easy access to a man that participated in Monday’s press conference firsthand.  Tommy Mire joins the Triple Option guys and we take in his perspective on some of the coaches’ comments and get a feel for the general vibe around campus. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support
