Sean Trende Previews the Midterm Elections, The Supreme Court on Covid Mandates, and Biden's Voting Bill Stalls in The Senate

    32:10

It was a tough week for the Biden administration. On Thursday the Supreme Court blocked the president’s vaccine and testing mandate for large private companies, dealing a big blow to his plans to use federal power to fight the pandemic. And just two days after the president delivered a blistering speech in Atlanta calling for passage of voting rights legislation, the White house received more bad news: Arizona Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema reiterated in a speech on the chamber floor that she would not vote to change Senate rules on the filibuster, a move that essentially stalls Biden’s two voting rights bills. All this is happening in the shadow of the upcoming midterm elections, which loom large over everything that will (or will not) happen in Washington in 2022. Tom Bevan, co-founder and president of RealClearPolitics, Washington Bureau Chief Carl Cannon, and Senior Elections Analyst Sean Trende join Andrew Walworth on today’s RealClearPolitics Takeaway podcast.

Biden and Trump Spar Over January 6th as Schumer Pushes to Change the Filibuster, and is the White House Gearing Up For A Battle with Teachers' Unions over Covid Closures?

    40:11

Both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris gave speeches on Thursday to mark the first anniversary of the January sixth attack on the US Capitol. Their prescription: change the way Americans vote to shift more control toward the federal government and away from the states. That is tough sell in a narrowly divided Senate – so what happens next? Meanwhile public-school teachers and parents are at odds over the return to in-person learning as the Omicron virus sweeps across the country. The CDC weighed in by relaxing isolation and quarantine guidelines for schools, setting up what could be a bigger battle between The White House and the teachers unions just in time for the 2022 midterms. Tom Bevin, co-founder and president of RealclearPolitics, Carl Cannon, Washington Bureau Chief, and Phil Wegmann, White House correspondent join Andrew Walworth on this edition of the RealClearPolitics Takeaway Podcast.

    Traffic Jams Political and Literal

    10:19

Welcome to 2022, where heavy snow in the Washington area trapped cars for nearly 20 hours on one of the area's major highways, a fitting metaphor for the political traffic jam that continues to freeze the Democratic agenda in Congress.
