Humans are innately social: connecting with like-minded people is not only important for our mental well-being, but could also serve a greater purpose. So, this week on On the House: The Household Management Science Insights Podcast, host Gabriella Joustra is joined by assistant professor of practice Karen Magruder to learn more about fostering eco-friendly communities.

A dedicated and award-winning educator, Karen is passionate about integrating evidence-based and innovative techniques to promote student success in online learning. Currently, she serves as assistant professor of practice at the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work, where she created a course on environmental justice and green social work, and to add, is a clinical social work supervisor.

In this episode, Karen sheds light on community roots in the context of household management and sustainability, describing the foundation of community as stable, coherent, and resilient. That aside, she reveals that fostering eco-friendly practices in our homes and communities can reduce our environmental impact on a larger scale, create socially equitable and interconnected communities, improve the economy, and increase jobs as well as property value.

Together, Gabriella and Karen discuss the inner workings of such communities, from ensuring accessibility and inclusion through usability testing and feedback from diverse communities, to policies and regulations. So, tune in today for a conversation teeming with insights on saving the earth through the strength of numbers.
