Suicide, Mindfulness, and Surviving Life
39:57Sometimes life just seems to flow along and it's not so much about surviving, it's about riding a wave and enjoying it. Other times life feels challenging. It feels like how am I going to get through this moment to the next? How am I going to survive? Well, I don't know if the ‘s’ word from the title of this episode has ever crossed your mind. You know that word suicide? Have you ever thought, oh, gosh, I'm just so discouraged? Many times I’ve talked with my guests about how to stay focused find contentment in life. I ask them, How do you achieve things in life that matter? Today, this conversation is for you. And I mean, there is a reason you're here and that we’re connected right now. Whatever the time is, whatever the place is, there's a reason that we’re connected at this very moment. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Connecting With Others It's very sad and unfortunate that so many people are feeling anxiety and discouragement in the world right now. I think you'll find value from today's episode, because what I've done is, I’m focusing on five keywords. And I'm just going to talk about those five things in order. The last word is the one that I personally think can be the most impactful and can help you the most. Take whatever you can from any of these points. If you find one sliver of value here, that's great. It might be one word, or one sentence that speaks to you today. It might be that one of the points may really speak to you. Listen to this episode over and over if you find it meaningful. Today, I just want to connect with you. Personally, I think connection is invaluable between human beings. It's not always easy, but I think the more we're able to connect somehow, the more our life will take on meaning. That doesn't mean you need to connect with hundreds of people and constantly be searching for more people to connect with you. No, that's not what I'm talking about at all. Because that sounds like a rat race and a goal where we would become scattered and frustrated. Simpler Than We Think The first word on my list is a word with only two letters. And it starts with D. And it's such a simple word. I think if you're feeling frustrated and stuck, or you're feeling down and discouraged, this word will be meaningful. Maybe you've lost someone or something in this life, and you're just hurting. Do you have a lot of pain or anger? Well, this word is an important word. The word is do. Do something else. Do something different. If you're sitting down, stand up. If you're walking, stop walking, and stand still. You know, it sounds overly simplified. You know what I think? I honestly think some of the best lessons in the world are such simple lessons. That's why we don't see them. That's why we take so long to learn them because they're hidden in their simplification. Where Is The Prize? You'll know that there are lots of books out there about finding the secret treasure or finding the answer to life. Often you get to the end of the book and you discover the answer was hidden in a simple place. Well this word do is just a simple word. It just means to me that you need to do something different from what you're doing now. Do something positive, don't do anything that might harm yourself or someone else but do something that's different from what you're doing currently. Tune in to listen to the rest of the episode. That in combination with the work in emotional intelligence with Dr. Jeanne Segal and understanding how emotions are processed in the body and that to really be mindful, it's not just of our thoughts, it's of our entire system because our responses show up in many places in our body and to be fully mindful you want to be fully integrated in your awareness. Thoughts on Breathing I got started with yoga and pranayama and breath practices and performance music is all about breathing and phrasing and breath. So the quickest way to mindfulness is to be mindful first of your breath because it does what we talk about in that integration of the body and the mind. From that place, if you can't have awareness of your breath, you're probably not being very mindful of other things. Is Anger Stopping You From Enjoying Life?
13:14When was the last time you noticed your anger? Was it when you exploded at one of your children? Was it when you lost your cool at work and said something you regretted later? Maybe you got angry, had a meltdown aimed at your partner, and then that nice evening you had planned turned into a nightmare? If any of these scenarios sound similar to an event in your life, you’d probably like to know how to harness that anger. When you get angry, do you justify it? Do you think, well, I had every right to get mad when that happened? I was right and the other person was asking like a jerk. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Justifying Your Anger If you’ve been justifying your anger, you’re like a lot of people. The fact is, it’s not usually a good thing to explode at someone and lose your cool. For one thing, whether you realize it or not, losing your cool is a sign of weakness. It means you’re out of control. You’re not able to control the way you behave with other people. A lot of people talk about being in control of your emotions. I don’t strive to be in control of my emotions, as much as I strive to be in control of how I react to my emotions. Your emotions are the body’s way of letting you know that something isn’t right. Something isn’t sitting well with your body, heart and mind. Your Warning Lights It’s a lot like the warning lights on your car. If something needs attention, the light comes on to give you a heads up. Maybe the windshield wiper fluid is low. Maybe the tires have lost some air pressure or maybe the engine is overheating. How are you going to react to any of those warnings? Are you going to explode at the first person you see? Are you going to get angry with the person at the lumber store that puts some bags of gravel into your trunk? Of course not. You’re going to pay attention to what needs attention and then you’re going to methodically go about making the situation right. Maybe you’ll go to your mechanic and tell him the engine light has come on and so the engine may be overheating. He’ll check it out and let you know what’s going on. Angry And Not Sure Why? There have been times in my life when I got angry in response to my emotions, and didn’t really even know why I was getting so mad at somebody. It turned out that I was upset about some random thing, and I took it out on one of the first people I came across. There were times when that person was my wife or a family member. Later I didn’t feel good at all about losing my cool over something that didn’t make sense. Do you notice a level of seething anger, somewhere below the surface of your consciousness? Does it show itself at random times, when it didn’t really make sense to get so mad? Freedom A few months after I began to be a daily meditator, I started to experience a level of freedom that was new to me. It was freedom from myself. Freedom from my inner bully; those voices in my head that kept telling me I wasn’t good enough, or I would be a failure, or I wouldn’t be able to earn a living. Fortunately, I proved my inner bully wrong. I put myself through university by working three jobs. After graduation, I got a full-time job and saved my money so I could buy some income properties. Have you listened to your inner bully and been able to move forward in spite of those voices? Have you been able to create a life you love, in spite of the odds against you? Is Joy Missing? Or are you in a place right now where your anger is preventing you from enjoying your life? The anger you are experiencing is coming from fear, and that fear is coming from your inner bully. Like I said earlier, listen to your emotions, and then make the decision to push through anyway. If you have a carefully thought-out plan for your life, you’re be able to gradually step towards your goals and while you’re doing it, you’ll enjoy the journey. You won’t enjoy the journey all the time, but if you are motivated and have the determination you need, you’ll move towards a life of joy, even if it seems slow. A lot of the time, it’s the self-work we do that helps us stay on track, and gradually achieve success. Is anger stopping you from enjoying your life? Make the decision to keep mindfulness central in your life. Develop a daily practice of meditation and be determined to do the work that needs to be done, rather than pretending everything is fine, or covering up your emotions with alcohol, drugs, shopping, busyness, or something else. I feel so empowered because I work with a lot of women that are powerful. They're doing jobs in the workplace; I worked with a woman who is a pharmaceutical representative. She makes a lot of money and is very sure of herself. I work with people to build their businesses. I do a lot of different things, because I've come more into my own. We really effect change in other people when we change ourselves. It's that connection we have with people. In the last year I've gotten more into working with mindset. Words of Wisdom Just, be still, because when we resist, it persists. Just be still in the place you're at and remember that it may not be time for you to get clear. When we start tapping into our intuition and listening and looking for signs; people, books, little things that come into our experience. It's good to start grabbing those and saying yes to those. Those are the things that lead us forward. The other thing I want you to remember is that you are the miracle. I learned this from Joe. [Joe Vitale] This shifted my entire reality when I interviewed him three years ago. We are looking for miracles. We're looking for all this help outside of ourselves. We are a miracle. We are being breathed. We don't beat our heart. We don't breathe our lungs. We are being breathed. We are already the miracle. Fierce and Fervent Gratitude
18:26Fervent is defined as having or showing great warmth or intensity of spirit and feeling. Having enthusiasm is also part of being fervent. The word is also defined as hot; burning; glowing. The word fierce means to me that there is passionate intensity behind the item you're referring to. Today I feel furiously eager and intense about the level of gratitude I feel for my life. I'm grateful to you, Mindful Tribe, for being a faithful listener. I'm grateful for my family and friends. I'm grateful for nature and for the fact that I have a healthy body and can run every day in nature. Today is Thanksgiving Sunday here in Canada, and that's the reason I'm talking about gratitude today. It's important to have gratitude every day, but today is a great reminder of the many ways I am grateful about the life I have.

Just allowing for that first instead of sweeping it under the rug. Then we have the power to shift it. Thoughts on Breathing This is an area where I know I haven't even scratched the surface of. There's such a wide range of pranayama and other techniques. I love to cycle, to be on my bike in nature, and walking will do this too. I find with cycling and dancing I notice I'm very expansive with it and easy with my breathing. That's also when I feel really connected with nature and just being in my body and who I am. Suggested Resources Book: I would say, study the book of yourself. Study your behaviors and then notice your emotions and what's going on vibrationally. Then notice what the thought patterns and beliefs are, because so often it's below the surface. App: I would say, get out in nature. Bullying Story When I was in elementary school, we were in the playground and there was a kid who was a troublemaker. He threw a rock at me. The teacher's reaction was actually stronger than mine. In that moment, I could tell that he really didn't intend to hurt me. It was an expression or trauma or hurt that he was going through. Hello Ego, Enough Already
18:15The ego is front row, centre for most of us when it comes to our core beliefs, our decision-making, our opinions, and our controlling paradigms. Essentially, the ego is busy protecting our inner child. That inner child is who we identify as “I”. I feel this or that; I believe, I am suffering, I have anxiety, I have internal challenges, I have urges I need to satisfy. You’ve heard me talk about our Inner Bully here on the show, and that inner bully is what holds us back, what causes us to make poor choices at times, that voice that tells us we’re not good enough in whatever way, whether it’s I’m not smart enough, I’m not wealthy enough, I’m not fast enough. Our ego is that part of us that controls your value of self. It continues a running narrative based on our beliefs and thoughts about ourselves. These believes come from lived experiences from various places including parents, relatives, friends, teachers, and society. The ego has a lot of power over us and it gets this power by interpreting our belief system and uncovering our deepest fears and sometimes our strongest confidence and courage. Listen & Subscribe on: iTunes / Stitcher / Podbean / Overcast / Spotify Protection From What? As I said, the ego is protecting us from our inner child, and it never stops. It’s extremely alert and is always ready to defend itself and act on anything it sees as a threat. Anytime there are threats to the ego, the ego steps up and makes an effort to redirect us. What happens that might be a threat to our ego? For a lot of us the answer can be one or more items on this list: showing a strong display of emotions making confident decisions jumping into extreme competition whatever that looks like for you feeling fear and moving forward anyway being a strong leader Are You On Autopilot? Your ego makes everything about you and what you believe. Anything going against those beliefs is seen by the ego as a threat. The ego’s goal is to diminish your worth and power. By doing that, it believes your inner child will remain safe. Remember, the ego is something we all have as humans, and it is a necessary part of who we are. Having said that, it’s important to understand a little about how the ego works and how we can keep it in check. As the title says, sometimes we have to tell our ego, “Enough Already”. You can work with the ego so you can improve your life. When we’re on autopilot, our ego takes control and does exactly what it wants to do. When we become aware of the ego, it will become less powerful over our thinking and our decisions. What To Do Here’s what to do to tell our ego, Enough Already: Become aware of your ego and realize you are not your ego. You and your ego are separate Have a friendly conversation with your ego. Finish this sentence … I am (blank). Notice what words come up for you after those two words, I am. Write down the words that came up for you following I am. Don’t judge what you wrote, just look at them with as little emotion as possible. If you do this various times throughout the day, you’ll start to identify the contents of your emotions and what’s holding you back. You’ll also start to identify your strengths. Give your ego a name. Giving it a name will help you have power over it and a better understanding of how it tries to control you. 34:07Today I’m talking about dealing with your failures and how you can turn them into wins. The episode is about how you view your accomplishments and how do you define failure. Your Inner bully is a pattern of thoughts that can feel like an enemy has set out to sabotage your life. Some people feel like these thoughts are beyond control. My relationships with family members have always been difficult and I’ve gone long periods of time without speaking with them. Since I’ve had the honor to work with Bruce Langford on hypnotherapy, my life has changed for the better. I’ve been able to establish more boundaries in my relationships, which has allowed me to renew a connection I’ve not had in a long time with my family. I’m able to talk with them without constant confrontations and tensions and we are now able to communicate on a weekly basis. I’ve also developed a sense of calmness that has been missing from my life. Now my battle with negative self talk has eased significantly and I feel more freedom to do things I enjoy without the constant burden of emotional stress. Hypnotherapy has also helped me to develop more interest in socialization and I’m better able to give more time to myself. A lot of people around me are receiving this all the time so I think that it's been a real lesson in just having perspective and not getting lost and taking it all personally. I can just step back and see it for what it is.
