Andrew Wood, Cofounder and CCO at Willo shares how Remote Leaders should think about the difference between micromanaging and over communicating
In today’s episode we speak to Andrew Wood, Cofounder and Chief Commercial Officer at a very innovative company called Willo. Here at Single Focus Talent, we have just partnered with Willo to explore the possibilities that self-led video based interviewing can bring to the table for our own candidates and clients. Very innovative technology that is helping us as an organisation scale in the tech space in a very succinct fashion.
We kick off by asking Andrew to tell us about the co founders, their story and how Willo came to be:
- Randstad
- Passion was finding great potential in candidates and placing them
- A mascot
- Seeing beyond the CV
- Cofounder, Euan Cameron, a digital marketer and Hiring Manager, automotive industry
- Got so many CV’s could not get through it all and thought of asking people to do videos
- Better way of organizing those videos
- Fascinating journey so far
We ask Andrew what has been the initial feedback from the world on working in this new way?
- Really mixed
- There's always two types of organisation
- One - rooted in history and find it hard to move away from traditional processes
- Two - how do I maximise the potential of people through having an amazing process and technology
- Candidates in jobs can only talk after hours, causing recruiters to work late
- Candidates running outside for calls, or pretending to be sick to have the time off for interviews
- Some are embracing the change, they know the video does not replace them
We ask Andrew to share his opinion on our previous process?
- Assessing candidates in different ways
- Body language
- Reciprocity
Three times more likely to get an interview based on this format, we ask Andrew to tell us where this comes from?
- CV submission vs CV plus
- The average time that someone reviews a CV is 7 seconds
- Looking at name, school, last employee and how long they were there
- What was 6 months, ended up being 2 months to get 29 placements with one resource
- Quality is higher
- Some people would have failed based on the paper process
We ask Andrew what kinds of conversation are they having with vendors in the space, CRM’s etc?
- Integrated with Workable and Greenhouse
- Working on Vincere
- Zapier
Then we ask Andrew how he finds setting the tone for leadership in the new culture and in Willo, remote leadership?
- Didn't have a sales process, Willo is so young
- Mindset has been, fail as much as you can, often as you can and as far as you can, learn from it
- Talk about over communication
- Remote Leaders should think about the different between micromanagement and over communicating
- Cofounders telling the team what they are doing all throughout the day and asking the team to do the same
- Trust people to do a good job
