A 14-year-old girl from Mississippi, Carly Gregg, is facing trial as an adult after allegedly shooting her mother, high school teacher Ashley Smylie, three times in the face. The harrowing details emerged during the trial, shedding light on a chilling sequence of events. The incident, which occurred in March at the family's suburban Jackson home, has gripped the community with its grisly nature. Testimony from Rankin County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Zachary Cotton revealed the disturbing actions of the accused. Cotton testified that the accused entered her bedroom carrying a firearm and fatally shot her mother. She then sent a text message to her stepfather using her mother's phone, coaxing him back to the residence. In addition, she allegedly contacted one of her friends, urging them to come over under the pretense of an "emergency." While awaiting her friend's arrival, she engaged in mundane activities such as playing with her dogs and singing to them. Once the friend arrived at the house, she asked “if she had ever seen a dead body before” before leading the witness to the victim’s body and saying her stepfather was next. Heath Smylie told investigators he was shot as soon as he walked into the house, said Cotton, noting that Health said Carly's "eyes were really big" and "it looked like she had seen a demon." Health told investigators Carly was screaming and then ran off. The friend was outside in the backyard when the second shooting took place, Cotton said. Cotton's testimony, supplemented by home security footage, painted a picture of calculated brutality. The defense, however, hinted at underlying mental health issues, citing Gregg's recent switch in medication and reports of hearing voices while in custody. Judge David Morrow, presiding over the case, emphasized the severity of the crime and the potential danger posed by Gregg to the community. Despite arguments regarding her mental state, Morrow upheld Gregg's $1 million bond, considering her a "special danger to others." "I do believe that Miss Gregg does pose a special danger to others," Morrow said. "The heinous nature of the crime, the premeditation that seems to have been involved here is pronounced -- it's severe and it does concern me that there is a danger to the community. Whether there's a mental component to this or not, I think anybody could argue that to kill another human being there is going to be a mental component involved." Two Colorado funeral home owners are facing trial after allegedly abandoning nearly 200 bodies they were responsible for cremation or burying, storing the remains in a neglected building for extended periods. Judge William Moller ruled that Carie Hallford, co-owner of Return to Nature Funeral Home, can face trial on 260 counts, including corpse abuse, money laundering, forgery, and theft. The investigation into the funeral home's practices began in early October following reports of a foul odor emanating from the building. The Hallfords were subsequently arrested in Oklahoma around a month later. Jon Hallford, also a co-owner, was initially scheduled for a preliminary hearing on January 4. However, his defense counsel requested a continuance, citing the need to review over 7,000 pages of documents. His preliminary hearing has been rescheduled to February 8. Additionally, his bond was reduced from a $2 million cash-only bond to a $100,000 cash property or surety bond. Judge Moller, at the request of Carie Hallford's attorney, significantly reduced her bond from $2 million to $100,000, potentially allowing her release from jail while the trial is pending. He noted that the crimes attributed to the Hallfords were not violent in nature, and Carie Hallford had no prior criminal record. The judge remarked, "The behavior of the Hallfords was designed to prevent the discovery of the bodies." Leading up to the discovery in October, the Hallfords faced financial difficulties, missed tax payments, eviction from one of their properties, and legal action for unpaid bills from a crematory that had ceased doing business with them. While prosecutors have not detailed a motive for the Hallfords' actions, FBI agent Andrew Cohen testified about the horrific conditions at the Penrose, Colorado building where decomposing bodies were found. The bodies were stored at room temperature, stacked on top of each other, and infested with flies and maggots. Text messages between the Hallfords revealed growing financial pressures and fears of being caught for mishandling the bodies. Jon Hallford even suggested disposing of the bodies by burying them with other deceased individuals or treating them with lye or fire, according to the presented texts. Judge Moller observed that the evidence pointed to a "pattern of ongoing behavior" aimed at evading detection. The Hallfords also allegedly provided concrete mix to families instead of ashes. Carie Hallford's lawyer, Michael Stuzynski, argued that, apart from surveillance video from September 9 showing Jon Hallford moving some bodies, there was no evidence of intentional mistreatment of the remains, suggesting "passive neglect." As the case proceeds to trial, the shocking allegations surrounding the mishandling of these bodies have left many questions unanswered and have cast a spotlight on the need for stricter oversight and regulations within the funeral home industry. A woman from New Richmond, Wisconsin, has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of her fiancé, Shaun Lewis, in their home. Marian Smith, 55, received her sentence on Tuesday in St. Croix Circuit Court after pleading guilty to charges of first-degree intentional homicide and resisting or obstructing police. The incident, which occurred 1½ years ago on August 27, 2022, shook the small community. According to court documents, Smith had called 911 from their residence in the 600 block of N. 2nd Street, prompting police and emergency medical personnel to respond. Upon arrival, officers found Lewis on the floor with multiple wounds. Despite efforts to save him, Lewis succumbed to his injuries at the scene. An autopsy conducted by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office determined that Lewis died from a stab wound to his abdomen, with an additional less serious wound to his chest. During the investigation, Smith provided law enforcement with various accounts of what transpired that fateful morning. Among her statements was the claim that Lewis had fallen on a knife during an argument between them, leading to his fatal injuries. Despite her explanations, the evidence presented in court, including the autopsy report, supported the conclusion that Smith was responsible for Lewis's death. As a result, she ultimately pleaded guilty to the charges brought against her. Smith's sentencing includes credit for the time she has already served in jail since her arrest. This means she is expected to spend approximately the first 1½ years of her term behind bars, with the remainder on extended release. The tragic outcome of this case serves as a reminder of the consequences of domestic disputes escalating to violence.
