When we last left off, Cayce had turned his back on farming and went to seek a name for himself in the city where he quickly became known as the Sunday school teacher and bookstore clerk with the encyclopedic memory. In the first half of the show we discuss Edgar’s rise to popularity, his first kiss and the strange, even frightening burst of high-strangeness that were known to occur around Edgar when emotions ran high. With thousands of documented reports, witnesses and return clients, Edgar Cayce made a name for himself as a healer who, despite being a simple country boy could merely put himself into a deep sleep, almost as if in a coma and begin uttering the words of a mysterious voice which seemed to know the secrets of medicine, the human body and the universe, dispensing its wisdom to all who would call upon it. In many ways, Edgar Cayce did for psychism what Nikola Tesla did for electricity and his legacy still endures today with a number of his highly accurate predictions still coming to pass. In this episode we discuss his early life as a boy in rural Kentucky and how from an occult perspective he may have attained his gifts. Often credited with establishing the science-fiction genre, the symbolism and story of Metropolis is often naively overlooked to emphasize the innovative use of special effects which would come to overshadow the film’s entire legacy. Using the historical backdrop of German occultism as our guide we find a coherent use of esoteric symbolism throughout Metropolis which illustrates some of the revolutionary, Aquarian philosophy rife in the counter-cultural underground of The Weimar Republic of the time. In the free section of the show we discuss its creator Fritz Lang, his personal quirks, political troubles and potent artistic legacy before articulating some of the occult symbolism used in the first half of the film.
