Episode 292 w/ Ryan Hennessy

Ryan Hennessy, or “your man from Picture This” as he calls himself, returns this week looking fresh as ever.Ryan’s new poetry book, In Another Lifetime, led into a conversation about putting yourself out there, embracing your accent, and why being a lad from a council estate in Athy should never stop you writing about love. From feeling lost after school to finding his place in music, he’s determined not to be put in a box. There’s also the magic of Picture This gigs, from a late night proposal in Vicar Street to surprising couples on their wedding day. Terence shares the special connection between the birth of his son and a Picture This song.Naturally, the lads then asked their romantic, poetry writing guest to judge a diss track from the TBX listeners. A slightly different take on expressing your feelings. This episode was sponsored by Rightstyle Furniture. RIGHT PRICE, RIGHT STYLE, RIGHT NOW. Visit rightstyle.ieGet in touch on [email protected]

There's big accusations being thrown around this week as Terence’s run with the Defence Forces is under investigation. He’s proud of his Grade 1, but Eoin has military sources reporting suspicious amounts of walking. Nowhere in the Phoenix Park is safe for Terry anymore.A question of would you rather wake on your roof or fight a sports mascot in the night sparks a debate on whether it's better to fight said mascot in the morning, or the nighttime. Terence is really stumped by this one and insists a roof is a roof, while Calvin and Eoin propose bouncy castles as safety equipment. The lads attempt to pick their top five rappers, before a pronunciation test points out the similarities between crisps and Rice Krispies (but not for the lads) We also get one of the best listener stories of all time, even if she was down a tenner at the cost of showing someone the 3Arena teaser video. The lads also get into holidays in a Tesco uniform, Terence’s management career, 3Arena contracts and backstage tantrums, before Darren Conway drops in to demand his 5 minutes on stage. The lads have spent years quoting Love/Hate, so getting its creator Stuart Carolan into the studio was always going to come with a few questions. They definitely weren’t expecting Kung Fu Panda to be one of the answers, though.Stuart took us behind the scenes of the show that had the country glued to the telly every Sunday. From the stories his mam brought home from her nursing shifts to the dark humour that made its characters unforgettable, there was plenty for the lads to get into. We also heard about keeping secrets from people looking to put a bet on the next death, and spotting something special in a young Barry Keoghan.Beyond Love/Hate, a slightly bumpy Ryanair flight helped convince Stuart to finally take the leap into writing. Even after creating a massive hit, getting the next story made is far from guaranteed. We also got into his new series Tall Tales & Murder, why Casey Walsh was the right man for the lead, and what “straight comedy” looks like in Stuart’s head. This episode was sponsored by Rightstyle Furniture. There’s a whole lot going on in today’s episode, and the lads don't know if they're coming or going after the big 3Arena announcemnet. Planning is already well underway, with Calvin and Eoin getting carried away with guests and zip lines, and you get an insight into the big secret operation that has been going on for weeks. It's the most wonderful time of the year - collecting time, and we're taken on a full historical tour of gathering pallets and tyres, and the fuel it added to the flats rivalries for 2 months of the year. Terence falls victim to another crazy (but believable?) accusation involving a secret cricket career, there's a question on who would survive longest abandoned on safari and another awful card-declining story. Former Ireland and Ulster rugby player Ryan Caldwell joined the lads this week to talk about his new book White Lines, and the life behind it.Ryan told us about falling in love with rugby as a kid in Belfast, chasing that dream all the way to Ulster, Ireland and the Premiership, and the identity that came with being known as a hard player on the pitch. But behind the career was a body breaking down through pain, injuries and concussions, and a mental toll that was becoming harder to ignore. He spoke openly about depression, addiction, the end of his rugby career, time in prison, and the long road back from a place where he could not see a future for himself. Ryan shared how he rebuilt his life, and why telling his story now has already connected with so many men who are struggling in silence. This episode was sponsored by Rightstyle Furniture. There's a whole lot going on in today's episode and it starts with the most important issue of the week: the TBX listener beef has now produced an actual diss track, and Eoin is brought in to judge whether this is art, or war.Terence is on edge after not getting the perfect level of froth in his coffee, but it's not all bad news as desperation for a lift means he's gotten one step closer to finding out where Eoin lives. Calvin's wound up over tipping culture and tutting taxi drivers, and has the not so bad suggestion that you should be able to buy a VIP pass for the bus lane. The lads also get into group Halloween costumes, eating chicken nuggets as an adult, and dreams of griddy celebrations. This week on Talking Bollox, Terence and Calvin are joined by psychologist and relational life therapy practitioner Louise Carroll for a proper deep dive into relationships - from red flags, gaslighting and “kitchen sinking”, to why most couples end up stuck in the same loops.Louise chats about growing up in Navan, working in Jigsaw for years, leaving it all to chase music with the Blizzards, and even managing a ranch in Costa Rica to get her head right. They break down the classic pursuer/distancer dynamic, why “never go to bed on an argument” can be a myth, and how phones and social media quietly wreck connection.Louise also explains her 12-week programme, Wisely Attached, and the “wounded, wild and wise” parts we all carry. This episode was sponsored by Rightstyle Furniture. We have praise for the Ireland international footballers who are listeners of the podcast - but Terence quickly turns that praise into confrontation. We try to pick a Talking Bollox five-a-side team and have to accept our chances of getting a game aren’t great. We got a big response from listeners to last week’s attempt to get Terence back on the stage for a live show, and this week we offer every bribe we can think of, from goal celebrations on his behalf at the Aviva Stadium, to the release of top-secret information he’s long demanded to know.Terence shows his disgust for a very normal word that he finds disgustingly posh and he shows a surprisingly relaxed attitude to walking around in public with toothpaste on his face.Your questions also have us weighing up if it’s better to be too scared or too embarrassed, and the prospect of getting inside the mind of someone from your phonebook. That brings Calvin to the thought of being caught inside the mind of one particular former guest – a fate he’d consider worse than time in prison.Send all of your questions and comments to [email protected]

Irish rapper Casey Walsh joined the lads this week, four years on from his last appearance and in a very different place in life. The last time Casey was here he was part of Versatile, but this time he returns as a solo artist with new music, a tour on the way, and a whole new outlook on life. He talked about the madness that came with the band’s rise, from selling out the 3Arena to touring with Snoop Dogg, and how being that young with that much attention, money and momentum sent him down a path he eventually had to step away from.Casey opened up about getting sober, finding faith, meeting his wife Kim, and how his life has changed since making those decisions. There is also a new chapter opening up for him, with his first major lead acting role in the new RTÉ and BBC series Tall Tales and Murder. He told us about getting the call, breaking down when he landed the part, and why acting was always the dream before music ever took over.We also got into creative hate comments, going viral overseas and how Coolio became more than just a childhood hero, but a close friend. This episode was sponsored by Rightstyle Furniture. The accusations are flying straight off the bat on this weeks Talking More Bollox. Calvin brings “evidence” of Terry’s car leaving tyre marks up the footpath… and Eoin tries to dig himself out of the missing Hot Ones episode hole.Terence discovers the joys of the ferry (planes are dead to him), dog passports and a couple of filthy childhood food confessions—plus a brain-melter ship riddle to finish. And will there be another live show? Terence finally answers the question you all want to know, and Eoin isn't wasting time bribing him to get up there on stage. This episode was sponsored by Kearns Sausages.
