195. Dante's Peak (1997)

In the 1990s, a horned-up nation watched with bated breath as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully made their big-screen debut, the possibility of these two finally kissing hanging heavy in the air. It wouldn't come to pass in this one, but 1998's X-Files: Fight the Future is a great sci-fi thriller that deftly bridges the divide between hardcore fans of the show and its extensive mythology and those who have never seen an episode.Check out this episode and then be sure to find us all over the place:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@revengeof90spodSubstack: https://revengeofthe90s.substack.com/ (for more commentary, reviews, etc.)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RevengeOfThe90sPodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/revengeof90spod

Dick Tracy is Warren Beatty's lifelong obsession, and though he maintains a death grip on the rights to the character to this day, he did give us one of the most visually striking comic-book movies ever made. Though it feels like this 1990 film has faded somewhat into obscurity, it remains full of bold choices, fantastic design, and some of your favorite actors of the time doing the craziest things. In this episode, we sit down with production designer Patrick Sullivan, who has had an incredible 30-year career in the industry, working on big budget blockbusters, Oscar-winning films, and everything in between. We talk to him about his career, but perhaps most importantly, he was a set designer on 'Twister' and we put him in the hot seat, grilling him on just how in the world the food looks so good during that scene at Aunt Meg's table. Have you been chasing a steak that looked as good as the ones in this movie your whole life like we have?Check out this episode and then be sure to find us all over the place:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@revengeof90spodSubstack: https://revengeofthe90s.substack.com/ (for more commentary, reviews, rants, etc.)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RevengeOfThe90sPodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/revengeof90spod

Forgive me for being one of those "back in my days" guys, but back in my day, we kids freaking loved to read. Macaulay Culkin's 'The Pagemaster' (1994) feels like the culmination of a generation's obsession with reading and disappearing into our own imaginations, something that now feels like a lost art.Check out our episode on this animated classic and then be sure to find us all over the place:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@revengeof90spodSubstack: https://revengeofthe90s.substack.com/ (for more commentary, reviews, rants, etc.)Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RevengeOfThe90sPodcastInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/revengeof90spodIn other words, you can hang out with us anywhere you'd like. The Great Volcano Movie War of 1997 brought us both Volcano (obviously), which we've covered before, and Dante's Peak, starring Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton and, if you ask us, is the superior winner of this studio battle. Come find out way we feel that way in our latest episode!

This is the role that turned Julia Roberts into a superstar and had '90s men all over the country prowling the streets to find their own beautiful, down-to-earth prostitutes to turn into their girlfriends. There are plenty of movies out there that make you think, "This was an Oscar winner?" Not to take anything away from 'As Good as It Gets,' but hindsight does make you wonder why exactly voters were so enamored with this one. That being said, there's still a lot to like about this Jack Nicholson/Helen Hunt romantic comedy, and we're going to talk about it. With a packed cast and Sandra Bullock's eternal charm, 'While You Were Sleeping' is a '90s light rom-com gem - and an under-the-radar Christmas movie! Check out our episode and be sure to follow us on social @revengeof90spod and on Substack at https://revengeofthe90s.substack.com.

The true story that 1993's 'Fire in the Sky' is based on is perhaps even more compelling for its strange twists and turns that last to this day, but as far as the movie goes, it has one of the most harrowing, unsettling alien abduction scenes ever made.
