I got an invite that I couldn't turn down... I took a last-minute trip to Chicago this week to attend the DNC, and I walked away with A LOT of feelings. I imagine the RNC felt similar—unifying, discouraging, hopeful, hopeless. What I was mostly reminded of was that our political systems can't save us. They're too unstable. Not to mention the fact that they're guaranteed to change every 4-or-so years!! I get vulnerable on this episode. I know that we've been working through the 6 pillars this summer, and they're hard practices to hold. I had a hard time living it out this week. I touch on Pillar 5: We are not naive. We know that walking with those who disagree can be messy, challenging, and even infuriating. But we believe the alternative—a world fractured by division—is far worse. We're not too far gone. We don't have to continue to live in a rage-fueled society that feels like our only hope is in politics. We can vote better. We can do better. We can be better. . . . . . I’ve been trying to lean into what’s been happening in society and culture as we unpack our 6 pillars.  This episode is unpacking Pillar 4: We chase civility, not silence. We reject the false choice between conviction and kindness. We can disagree fiercely, but with respect and a commitment to finding common ground. Let me tell you, choosing civility is usually harder and will cost you more than choosing silence. But it is the MORE REWARDING choice.  I believe I chose civility over silence when I posted a prayer for President Trump after the assassination attempt last month. That cost me followers, but I don’t regret it because seeing the humanity in someone who went through something traumatic was the right thing to do, rather than staying silent to keep my follower count up.  So how in the world do we make the hard choice to respectfully disagree while still engaging in conversation? Here’s a few ideas: Think before you speak. Don’t assume. Seek out shared values.  Take stock of the voices you’re paying attention to. . . . . . The Olympics Opening Ceremony has been a HOT topic, especially among Christians. People were angry, sad, offended, confused—a lot of things. And honestly, I was surprised by the outrage. I’m digging deep and unpacking my thoughts in the context of our second pillar.  So how do we do this conviction and compassion thing? Is it possible? I believe it is! We’re unpacking the six pillars of our motto: Don’t stand on issues, walk with people. This episode focuses on the first pillar: We seek understanding not victory.  We prioritize listening and learning over winning arguments. We believe both are possible. We hold our beliefs fiercely, but we hold them with open hands, not clenched fists. In the age of TikTok, X, and a 24-hour news cycle, it’s easy to feel like an expert on topics we actually don’t know much about. And when we feel like an expert on something, seeking understanding can feel pointless, because we already know everything, right?  We’ve got to get to the place where we know that we don’t know everything. And that’s okay. So how do we seek understanding? Here are a few ideas: Be an active listener. (Hint: it’s impossible to be an active listener on social media, so maybe have those conversations offline.) Limit distractions. Leave your phone in another room. Remember that just because someone stops talking, doesn’t mean you need to start. Flip the funnel: ask open-ended questions to gain a fuller picture of what the other person believes Remember that the other person and their beliefs are not a problem to solve. And a single conversation isn’t going to change that. . . . . .
