Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to discuss the quirky yet wholesome Christmas special “Lollipop Dragon: The Great Christmas Race!” Brought to you by the Society for Visual Education, Inc., a division of the sewing company Singer, the special was part of a huge series of books, tapes, and other merchandise.The 1986 special sees Lolly and company hosting the big Christmas party in the land of Tum Tum where all the world’s lollipops are produced. When the aristocracy arrives, the herald issues a royal proclamation: “In honor of the season, a great Christmas race will be run.” Not only can anyone can enter, but the winner also gets lollipops made in their likeness and flavor of choice. Oh, and Santa will give them out to all children of the world for Christmas Day! What high stakes!Meanwhile Baron Bad Blood spies on the proceedings and decides to enter to spoil Christmas with liver flavored treats. He creates a jet-sleigh pulled  by chimeras to counter the panda-pulled and horse drawn sleighs of Lolli and gang. He also sabotages the other contestants Wacky Races style. Despite a detour through the Forest of Mirrors and having to stop to rescue the other sabotaged contestants, Lolli and gang win the race! The Baron is defeated!Buzzsaw arm weapon? Check. What’s up, dudes? It’s a Sherman Hemsley vehicle about a small Philadelphia church. Yes, it’s an Amen Christmas, and Joe Fulton the Christmas Aficionado is with me to wax poetic about it! Well…or at least reminisce about watching it. From December 1986, it’s “Your Christmas Show of Shows!”It’s Christmas, and Philadelphia’s First Community Church is preparing a Nativity play. They’ve sent out invitations to local celebrities and politicians and one has finally responded positively! Unfortunately, they only have two days to get it ready. Oh, and Deacon Frye has insulted and run off the director!The staff works hard to finish the preparations for the show, but a freak snow storm prevents the film crew from attending. Of course, the staff is heartbroken. The children, however, are unfazed, and perform the pageant with zeal and joy. Moved by the sweet innocence of the youth, the staff join in singing “Away in a Manger.”Homemade knit socks? Check. Hand seen costumes and individually typed programs? Got ‘em. Judy Winslow? Umm…yes? What’s up, dudes? Its one of the best vampire movies out there! Yes, I've got Bob Baker from Festive Foreign Film Fans,  Santa Ambassador Matt Spaulding from  North Pole Radio, and Jeremy Phelps the Alamo City Santa with me to talk Salem's Lot! It's a 1979 made for tv movie adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel, and it's dope! When Ben Mears comes back to Jerusalem's Lot, he intends to research and write about the old Marsten House. He befriends a young college girl named Susan, and begins a relationship with her. Meanwhile, the house is bought by antiquities dealers Kurt Barlow and Richard Straker. Spoiler alert: Barlow's a master vampire and Straker's his familiar.The town's denizens slowly begin disappearing, falling ill, and dying. As it turns out, Barlow's been transforming the Glick boys and others into vampires. Mears, Susan, and a few others, including a doctor, a teacher, and young boy named Danny, begin to fight back. After Fr. Callahan fails his crisis of faith and leaves, and after Susan is transformed and slain, the rest eventually kill Barlow and Straker. They set the town on fire, too.Creepy old haunted house? Check. Creepy old antique shop? Uh huh. Creepy old blue skinned vampire with rat teeth? Only if it's a poor makeup job! Yes, it's the 1990-91 "Baby-Sitters Special Christmas!"The Baby-Sitters have a lot to do. There's shopping for secret Santas, planning the hospital Christmas party, and attending to their regular sitting duties. Unfortunately, Stacey has to manage her diabetes as well. Quite frankly, it's a monumental talk during the sweet-filled holiday season, and she doesn't do a great job. Meanwhile, Kristy works around the house to earn a commercial grade baseball glove. Claudia and the other girls begin to decorate for the annual Christmas party. Cue the usual 'kid who hates Christmas' bit. In this case, it's a boy with a broken leg whose parents are constantly working. Rather dramatically, Stacey lets her blood sugar spike, Dawn reprimands her, and Kristy gives her brand new mitt to the boy. At least they all sing "We Wish You a Merry Christmas."Rambunctious children? Yep, little Pete from Pete & Pete. Near death experience. Uh huh, poor Stacey. Lyle Perez from The Halloween Podcast joins me live to watch some of the wild and creative ‘80s Halloween commercials!  We begin with Count Chocula recoiling in fear of Count Dracula. The Invisible Man and the Mummy also try to get cheap mufflers at Meineke. Meanwhile, Count Scary attempts to persuade us to pick up some 3D glasses at our local Wendy's restaurants. His widows peak is out of control! Ogilvy Mather created two memorable commercials. The first has young lovers accidentally combining peanut butter and chocolate at viewing of a scary movie. The second sees Frankenstein's wretch combine the two after his resurrection. Then follows Ronald McDonald talking with McNugget buddies in Halloween costumes. Oh, and Vincent Price even hawks Polaroid video cassettes. We also see Elvira plug Coors!A killer stalks his prey to a John Carpenter synth score clone. What's up, dudes? Stephen King has had a huge influence in the horror genre, and that includes werewolves. Jeremy Phelps the Alamo City Santa is with me to talk all about the 1985 movie "Silver Bullet!" In a small town, it's hard to hide as a bat-wielding bear-like werewolf (bear-wolf?), unless you're a reverend, of course.Siblings Marty and Jane have a contentious relationship. Things get crazy when people start dying around the full moon. At first, the deaths are chalked up to accidents, but when a young boy is torn to shreds, a posse forms. Naturally, more deaths follow.Marty attracts the werewolf's attention shooting off fireworks, but manages to injure its eye. Consequently, he enlists Jane's help in tracking down the culprit, searching for one-eyed persons. They discover Rev. Lowe with a new eyepatch, and confront him. He attacks, but is killed when their uncle shoots him with the specially crafted bullet. All's well that ends well.Small town? Check. Rubber snakes? Yep. Rocket powered motorbike wheelchair?
