Christopher Bernard Wilder — infamously nicknamed “The Beauty Queen Killer” — was a wealthy, charming Australian-born predator who terrorized the United States during a six-week killing spree in 1984. Posing as a professional photographer and modeling scout, Wilder lured young women—often aspiring models and beauty pageant contestants—by promising photo shoots or modeling contracts. Once isolated, he would abduct, torture, and murder them, often using electrical shocks, tape, and other instruments of restraint. His victims spanned at least 12 women across multiple states, from Florida to California, with eight confirmed dead and several others missing. Wilder’s spree began in early March 1984 after years of escalating sexual violence dating back to Australia in the 1960s. Despite repeated arrests and psychiatric interventions, he managed to evade lasting punishment until his final rampage.
Wilder’s reign of terror ended on April 13, 1984, when he was confronted by police in Colebrook, New Hampshire. During a struggle, Wilder was shot and killed—some reports suggesting suicide, others describing it as accidental gunfire during the scuffle. After his death, investigators discovered an arsenal of weapons, duct tape, and photographs of potential victims in his car, cementing his reputation as one of America’s most sadistic serial killers. His background as a successful contractor and race car driver helped him project an air of respectability that masked a history of sexual assault and manipulation. Authorities have since explored possible links between Wilder and several unsolved murders, including the Wanda Beach murders in Sydney, though no conclusive evidence has been proven. Even decades later, his crimes remain a haunting case study in how charm and wealth can conceal monstrous predation.
