When Alex Murdaugh took the stand in his own defense during his double-murder trial in February 2023, it was one of the most dramatic and controversial decisions in recent courtroom history. Murdaugh denied killing his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, but admitted he had lied repeatedly to investigators about being at the dog kennels the night they were murdered. He blamed his deception on years of opioid addiction, saying it made him paranoid and clouded his judgment. While trying to paint himself as a grieving, broken man caught in a web of lies, Murdaugh also confessed to massive financial crimes—stealing millions from clients and his own law firm—hoping to convince jurors his dishonesty didn’t make him a murderer.

The move, however, badly misfired. Prosecutors used his testimony to dismantle what little credibility he had left, highlighting his pattern of deceit, manipulation, and self-preservation. Jurors later said his demeanor came off as calculated rather than remorseful, and that his words only confirmed their belief in his guilt. His emotional swings—crying one moment, deflecting the next—seemed performative and insincere. By taking the stand, Murdaugh gave the prosecution exactly what it needed: proof that he was capable of lying effortlessly under oath, just as he had lied to everyone else in his life. His testimony, meant to save him, ultimately sealed his fate.
