Getting over yourself with Clarissa Casitillo-Ramsey

    46:29

Hey Scmidlifers! We are kicking off 2022 with the series "How they got started." I love hearing about a person's journey - where they began with the twists and turns that led them to where they are now. But, here's a hint - where we all end up isn't always where we had planned. And thank goodness for that! I mean, I would have never thought I'd be a podcaster! My first guest of the series is Clarissa Castillo-Ramsey, a multi-passion entrepreneur: abstract artist, leadership & life coach, and author. Clarissa helps men and women ready to transition out of the 9-5. She works with them to craft their corporate exit plan and build their creative business. Clarissa is a serial career pivoter. She's worked in various industries from retail to higher education to healthcare and other places in between. Art and championing/developing others have been her through lifelines. In 2010 she landed her dream job as an internal development coach for a top-ranking healthcare organization. By 2018, Clarissa knew it was time to pivot again. That's when she decided to write about her desire to move to entrepreneurship. In 2020 she self-published her book Painting Your Path. I'm also featured in the book, so check it out! Clarissa's story is inspiring in many ways. I hope there are places you can see yourself in her decisions and ways to take your next step forward. What You Need to Know About Your Job Search with Staci Witten

    44:30

These are some crazy-ass times, y'all. I'm excited to have this conversation on this episode because even though mostly I speak to and talk to women entrepreneurs. But I know that many of you are working and building a business on the side or are not interested in being in business for themselves. So today's topic is making the most of your job search. My guest, Staci Witten, is a career and leadership coach, and we have been friends for over 20 years - what?!? 20 years? It's hard to believe, but Staci and I met while leading Vacation Bible School in the summer of 1999 - or maybe 1998. Neither of us could remember. We recorded this episode in late May 2020. With the death of George Floyd and the crucial messages that followed, Staci and I both agreed to hold off on releasing this conversation. In so many, I am happy that we did. As this episode is being released, we are mid-July. I'm seeing friends and family who have lost their jobs due to the fallout of COVID-19. With back-to-school, there is uncertainty from teachers and parents as they wrestle with decisions that affect their families. Many parents are asking what's next for their careers during this uncertain time. I've seen teachers thinking of switching careers and parents looking to be able to manage their children in distance learning while working. We shared how we both feel shelter-in-place will restructure the working environment to be more working from home. Staci offers compelling insights for your job search now and what to consider going forward. Tips on looking beyond your job title and provides the next steps to finding a job. And even ways to utilize networking. Speaking Up and Giving Yourself Permission with Nariah Broadus

    46:08

When I started this series that I’m calling “Now More than Ever” the global pandemic of the Corona Virus was the backdrop. And now on June 4, 2020 when I am publishing this recording, we still have the pandemic and now in the US, we also have a lot of hurt and anger from displays of racism and social injustice with the murder of George Floyd. As a white woman, I am very aware that I have work I need to do against systemic racism and my own color blindness. I have taken to educating myself, reading books, listening and paying attention when I’d rather turn away. What I also didn’t turn away from was the conversation with my friend Nariah Broadus that I am sharing with you today. Nariah is one of my trusted coaches and friends and she is also a woman of color. Having had this conversation already scheduled, I wanted to be sure that Nariah was still up to having it. I would certainly understand if she chose to reschedule. Nariah very willingly agreed to have the conversation. She feels it's important to get out of the stories we are telling ourselves. And she felt the conversation was not just about race relations but also speaking up in your life and giving yourself permission to do so. That this is what brings about positive change. I’m hoping that you not only learn about giving yourself permission but also about being willing to be messy with it. Be messy with knowing that speaking up for the bigger things like speaking out against racism means that it’s okay to not have the exact word or know exactly what to say. Please realize that no one is expecting that.  It’s past time that as white women realize we have more influence and power than we ever thought possible. So please use this time to listen, really listen, to learn and to take action.  My hopes are that this conversation inspires you too. What to Know About Health and Wellness with Valerie Tookes

    40:45

My guest in this episode of the podcast is Valerie Tookes. Valerie is a health and wellness coach and is my personal health & wellness coach plus an amazing friend of mine. She has helping me shift from measuring my worth from the #'s on the scale to learning to love my body. I wanted to have this conversation becasue of the many memes and jokes about gaining the “Quarantine 15” and non-stop happy hours. And I get it (and hey, have been there!) but I wanted to invite Valerie into having a conversation about easy and loving shifts we can make for ourselves during this time. Valerie offers some wonderful insights on shifting habits and how to even start a new health & wellness journey during this time. Plus hanging out with her is like being on the receiving end of a warm hug. You can find Valerie at http://www.herholistichealth.com/ and she also does coaching for the Women's Vitality Center in Berkeley, California.

Processessing Your Emotions Through Writing - Even If You Aren't A Writer

    42:29

Join me on this episode with my guest Deb Cooperman - workshop leader, coach while we talk about processing our emotions through writing - even if you aren't a writer! During this roller coaster of a ride through this global pandemic, many of us are experiencing a wide range of emotions - stress, anxiety, anger, fear, sadness and even guilt. Often these emotions can be all in one day and sometimes they can seem overwhelming. Mental health professionals are recognizing how this time will have lasting effects on us all. Deb and I will talk about ways to sort through our emotions using writing as a tool - as Deb puts it, "to find emotional footing in a world that has turned upside down; to spill out the anxiousness and create breathing room." We will talk about ways to start a writing practice and tips to use writing as a tool to create a little bit of an oasis in this crazy world. I even share my "red pen" moment in 10th grade English that had me believing that I wasn't a writer. Deb gives us all permission to explore our feelings and get out of our own ways despite how we see ourselves - a writer or not.

What You need to Know About Connection with Lara Heacock and Jo Casey

    58:18

Hey, hey, hey! This is episode #2 of the series that I’m that I’m running over at the Midlife Schmidlife podcast called “Now More Than Ever” where I’m holding Facebook Lives on topics that I feel are important during this time of shelter in place and in turn turning them into a podcast. This week, I’m introducing you to two of my favorite humans - Lara Heacock and Jo Casey. We are in a business mastermind together and have been meeting for over two years. But this conversation isn’t just for business owners - what I’m hoping that you get out of this conversation is the fact that real connection can be made even in these trying times and this mastermind is proof. The three of us share what a mastermind is and offer ideas on starting one even if you don’t have a business. We talk how shelter in place has affected connection in our daily lives but also ways we are getting through. Plus we really dive into having connection with ourselves and what we need during this roller coaster of a time. You can find Jo Casey over at https://www.jocasey.com/ Lara Heacock at https://laraheacock.com/ and https://kindovermatter.com/. What You Need to Know About Boundaires

    54:13

It’s been quiet here on the Midlife Schmidlife podcast but as I’m putting together this episode it's April 16, 2020 and we are in the midst of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Most of the world is in “shelter in place” mode and that has brought up new ways to have to manage our daily activities. Like a big spotlight, this pandemic is showing us what’s important, how we show and our loved ones show up under stress and places that need a little “tweaking.” Because I firmly believe that what is showing up for us now - was showing up for us before, it’s just easier for us to see.  That’s what I’m bringing you to a popup series of the podcast called “Now More Than Ever.” I’m inviting guests to have a conversation about ways to use this time to grow and decide what you will carry with you into the future.  These conversations are happening as Facebook Lives first on my Facebook page and then will be shared here on the podcast. You are welcome to both of course! My first guest is Dorena Kohrs of Space Doula. Dorena is a Feng Shui master and intuitive space & energy clearer. She is a believer that we can use our homes to reflect the lives we want to live and it’s some fascinating stuff! Dorena and I had a conversation last week about boundaries both physical and emotional. Many of you are not working from home for the first time full time or your partner is. There is the fact of having the kids home and managing distance learning and so many other scenarios. Dorena offers some insight on how to make all of this happen and we also talk about respectful conversation. Be sure to head over and find out more about Dorena at https://spacedoula.com/ Show notes with all of the links can be found here: https://breakingthegoodgirlrules.com/blog/boundaries-now-more-than-ever
