In Dhubri in Assam, there is a District and Session Court Building. But it was only built in 2018. There was a house there before that. A Hijra (transsexualwoman) was murdered in 1852. Was the murderer her jilted lover? or was it her disciple? Whoever the perpetrator may be, for the judges, the identity of the accused mattered lesser than that of the victim. In fact, the honorable judges dedicated a lot of space in that judgment criminalizing the victim and others like this. In this episode, we look at how this murder led the Colonial British government started a state-sponsored program to "eradicate" the Hijra Community in the North Western Provinces. We also talk about how this draconian legislation's effect on India last well into the 21st Century, and in many ways still affects transgender community in our country.
