    Trek Untold-Episode 69

    1:42:26

Star Trek TOS Book Revue with Ian Spelling, Dan Chavkin & Brian McGuire Even after 55 years, there are still new stories to discover about the original Star Trek series! This week, we take a look at two new, very different, and very fascinating books about the Trek series that started it all. First up, Dan Chavkin and Brian McGuire stop by to discuss "Star Trek: Designing the Final Frontier: The Untold Story of How Midcentury Modern Decor Shaped Our View of the Future," a book all about the Modernist, Futurist and Brutalist design elements, architecture, interior design, and art that made TOS look so iconic. Following our discussion of that book, journalist Ian Spelling sits down with us to tell us about "Star Trek: The Original Series: A Celebration." Co-authored by Ben Robinson and released through Hero Collector, this hardcover coffee table book is perfect for new Trekkies and hardcore fans alike, gathering interviews from the stars, supporting actors, and behind-the-scenes crew to tell the story of Star Trek from the beginning in a gorgeous format. Plus, news and updates on other upcoming projects coming out from Hero Collector! Best of all, make sure you don't miss the part about entering our contest sponsored by Hero Collector to win a copy of the "Star Trek TOS: A Celebration" book for yourself. Trek Untold-Episode 68 | Shawn Ewashko

    1:13:14

Shawn Ewashko, Visual Effects Project Manager at CBS, talks Star Trek VFX Visual effects are one of the most important parts of any sci-fi series, and is often an integral part of any TV show or film, whether you are aware of it or not. When it comes to Star Trek, everything from computer screens, phaser blasts, starships, and other effects are added to take the show from ordinary to extraordinary. Shawn Ewashko is the Visual Effects Project Manager at CBS, working on the Short Treks, "Star Trek: Discovery," "Star Trek: Picard," and the upcoming "Strange New Worlds" series. Alongside Jason Zimmerman, he oversees the creative and logistical process of making sure all of the VFX shots come together to look impressive and look natural, and blend into reality.  In this episode of Trek Untold, we take a deep dive with Shawn to discuss his roots in Star Trek, what he learned at the DAVE Academy, his history of working with Alex Kurtzman, and VFX he has done for other shows, and then we beam into our Trek Talk. Shawn breaks down the workflow for VFX, what it takes to make a scene, and all the technical talk that would make Geordi La Forge's head spin! I also ask Shawn the tough questions, like de-aging Brent Spiner for Picard and the "copy and paste" ship battle from the finale for season 1 of Picard, how working remotely changed what he and his team did, details on their Emmy winning episode "Su'Kal" and making the shadow monster with contortionist Jinny Jacinto, and much more!   NOTE: This episode was recorded before the Emmy awards, so we didn't get to mention it – but congrats to the Star Trek VFX team on the win! Trek Untold-Episode 67 | Max Cervantes

    1:58:52

Max Cervantes, Prop Maker on Star Trek DS9, VOY, ENT & Films It's always a happy day on Trek Untold when we chat with a lifelong Trekkie who was able to make their dreams come true. Max Cervantes was a diehard Star Trek fan from day one of the series, building AMT ERTL Enterprise models and building his own phaser hand prop with items he found around his house. Years later, he finds himself working with Michael Moore and Rick Sternbach, making props and models for Star Trek DS9, VOY, ENT, and a few of the TNG Films. Max discusses seeing the original set of Logan's Run, which put him on the path to professional prop-making, working on "Real Genius," "The Stuff," and a story about how the slime went horribly wrong one day, tales of bodybuilder Sven-Ole Thorsen while on "Captain Power," working on theme park attractions like the San Rio park in Tokyo, and more. Then it's time for Trek talk, which includes prop stories from DS9s "The Visitor," "In the hands of the prophets," phaser rifles in First Contact, the hidden origin of props like "The Wrath of Khan" communicator, and up-close looks at some of the props in Max's collections including weapons from the Klingons, Cardassian and the Jem'hadar, Captain Proton's gun from "Star Trek: Voyager," and some secrets about the Orbs of the Prophets, the Move Along Home game, the Borg, ketracel white tubes, the Sword of Kahless, and gold-pressed latinum that you may have never heard before!
