Dr. Steven Koonin is a theoretical physicist, former Chief Scientist at BP, former Under Secretary for Science at the Department of Energy in the Obama administration, and is currently a professor of Civil and Urban Engineering at NYU. He is also the author of Unsettled, a book about the abilities and limits of climate science. Michael has a long history of trying to understand the role that water plays in fundamental biological operations from structural assembly to diseases like Alzheimers and Prion disorders. Presently, he is hard at work on a biological theory of everything where water plays out the role of central actor in biological processes from form to consciousness. Our conversation today begins with Michael's journey into the water rabbit hole, exploring the strange way that water structures itself within cells. At least 87 potential authors - from Daniel Defoe to Sir Francis Drake to Anne Hathaway to Sheikh Zubar - have been proposed as candidates, but all of these proposals suffer from the same problem - they don't quite fit the historical facts and so have to be stretched, ill fitting, to even be considered. Only one of the theories seems to make sense in context of history and biography, and it is that the true author of the plays was Sir Thomas North, soldier, lawyer, and translator.
