Mexican authorities deployed heavily armed soldiers, armored vehicles, and military aircraft to the streets of Culiacán, Sinaloa, in January 2023 after the arrest of Ovidio Guzmán López, the son of notorious drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, triggered an eruption of violence involving the Sinaloa Cartel. Cartel gunmen launched coordinated attacks against security forces, erected roadblocks, hijacked vehicles, and set cars and trucks ablaze throughout the city in an attempt to pressure the government into releasing their imprisoned leader. The violence spread to Culiacán International Airport, where cartel members opened fire on military aircraft and a commercial Aeroméxico passenger plane, forcing terrified passengers to take cover as bullets struck the aircraft. Mexican troops responded with armored convoys, helicopters, and heavily armed units as gun battles engulfed several neighborhoods. Authorities reported that seven members of the security forces had been killed, while another 21 security personnel and eight civilians had been injured. Reports also described armed cartel members storming hospitals, abducting medical personnel, and forcing doctors to treat wounded gunmen. Schools and government offices were closed, airports throughout Sinaloa suspended operations, and residents were ordered to remain indoors as authorities struggled to regain control of the region.

The violence followed a major operation to capture Ovidio Guzmán, who had allegedly assumed an important leadership role within the Sinaloa Cartel following his father's extradition to the United States in 2017. American authorities had accused Guzmán and his brother Joaquín of overseeing substantial methamphetamine production operations and had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest or conviction. The arrest carried particular significance because Mexican security forces had previously captured Guzmán in October 2019 but released him after heavily armed cartel members unleashed widespread violence throughout Culiacán, overwhelming security forces and threatening civilians. Determined to avoid a repeat of that humiliation, Mexican authorities transported Guzmán to Mexico City shortly after his latest capture. The renewed fighting exposed the extraordinary military capabilities of the Sinaloa Cartel, whose gunmen had demonstrated their ability to challenge government forces, attack airports, disrupt transportation networks, and effectively paralyze a major Mexican city. The operation also placed renewed scrutiny on President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's security strategy, which had emphasized addressing the underlying causes of crime rather than relying exclusively on military confrontation. The arrest occurred shortly before a scheduled North American leaders' summit involving López Obrador and American President Joe Biden, underscoring the international significance of the government's confrontation with one of the world's most powerful drug trafficking organizations.
