Scripture for Meditation ACTS 1 NIV 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven.” 12 Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day’s walk from the city. KJV 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey. Meditation on Scripture: Recently I went to Texas to observe another total solar eclipse. During totality the sun is completely covered by the shadow of the moon. I was dark and it appeared as night. After it had passed I continued to look up at the sun with the solar glasses with awe and wonder. And this as something that had predicted with exactness and I have seen it before. I had a solid understanding of what was happening and yet I was in awe.  When I read this passage I imagined a group of people staring into heaven in wonder, struggling to come to terms with their expectations so radically being altered and then to have Jesus come and go into the sky. This was not how they expected it to be. It did not meet what they had guessed would happen. I can only imagine the wonder they experienced. I can only imagine that after asking about him restoring the Kingdom of Israel he then refused to answer the question they asked in they way they wanted the answer. Then he has the ability to come and go from beyond this form of existence. I visualize a group of people staring up. Waiting in expectation of what would come next. Then as they are gazing, two people in white clothes (who seem to be heavenly beings) ask them why they are looking up to heaven. Jesus would come again. I often wonder what they were thinking. How much did they understand about what was to come? It is likely that before the Holy Spirit came, they really had no idea what was coming.  There are times when we don’t understand God’s next move. In fact that is probably much more often that we would like to admit. There are undoubtedly times when things are much harder  than we expect. Equally there are times when things have been planned with much more precision that we could have expected also. I hope that as those moments happen that we can peer into heaven with wonder. Not with doubt but with humble expectation of the fulfillment of all the words written in the Bible. I hope that as the moments of wonder pass, that we can constantly turn our minds back to the coming of Jesus, as was recommended here.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Meditation on Scripture: It is clear that when we become believers our desires and preferences do not dethrone God’s. Many times we have genuine questions about God's timing and those questions are not answered in the way we would wonder. In fact the more we feel we should understand the more confusion we can feel.   Nowhere is this more focused than the coming of the Kingdom of God. Scholars and believer’s throughout the centuries have wondered and pondered and tried to crack the code of the times and seasons of God but Gods timing remains his own. The follow on theme here is that God does not give to us to decipher his timing. That does not mean we sit as passive observers in God's work. The Holy Spirit is meant to empower us to do the part that is our own. To witness of Jesus Christ. This is where God wants us to spend our focus.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. NASB 1 The first account I composed, Theophilus, about all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when He was taken up to heaven, after He had given orders by the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen. 3 To these He also presented Himself alive after His suffering, by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking of things regarding the kingdom of God. Meditation on Scripture: As we read in scripture we see Gods declaration that it is the word of God. Equally valid is that this word came through the direct experience of people, influenced by the Spirit. The book of Acts is such an example. The same author that wrote the Gospel of Luke also wrote Acts and in fact that is what is referenced here. As we read scripture it can be deeply meaningful to see how God interacted with other human beings like us.  Good did not use some alternative form of human being to put out His word. God’s Spirit has great power both in times past and also now. Of all the important and powerful things that could be shared there are none so meaningful as to examine the role of Jesus Christ as our Savior, Redeemer, God, and King. That is where Luke starts. Then he continues with the witnesses to the events after the death of Jesus in the book of Acts.  We worship a God who has interacted with human beings throughout history and is willing to have a relationship with each and every one of us.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. And God made a wind blow over the earth, and the waters subsided; 2 the fountains of the deep and the windows of the heavens were closed, the rain from the heavens was restrained, 3 and the waters gradually receded from the earth. At the end of one hundred and fifty days the waters had abated; Meditation on Scripture: I am very close to someone who has suffered a severe reduction in their short term memory function. So much so that conversation loops multiple times in a very short time. Things I share with this person do not make it into their memory. As a result it causes me to reevaluate the nature of identity and connection. Our spiritual substance is not reduced to our ability to remember. Eventually all the physical matter that makes up our brains and memory creation mechanisms will fail and eventually turn to dust. Does this mean we cease to be? Do our memories define us? How bound are we to who we used to be? How bound are we to the actions of others in the past?  When I was reading around in scripture for instances of remembering I was rewarded with the realization that many of the references to remembering, it is God that is doing the remembering. Remembering His covenant, remembering His children. There are times when he asks us to remember, such as remembering the sabbath day to keep it holy. Unlike us, remembering is something that defines God. It is a characteristic of God to remember his covenants and to honor them. It was God remembering Noah that saved him and his family from the flood.  In this scripture we see God remembering Noah, and after a period of trial, to allow Noah's life to move to the next level. In our dark moments we feel that God may not remember us. We don't see God’s timing, we don't know God’s intentions. We don't fully understand the upper and lower bounds of His covenant. Know this, God remembers you. Even more importantly that God rescuing us for our life circumstances, God remembers his great covenant to us. He remembers the offering of redemption. When things get difficult and you wonder if God remembers you, remember His word. Since our memory is so much more limited, lets commit to rejuvenate our understanding of Him by reviewing the events in scripture and possibly keeping a personal journal of ways God has blessed us that we can review when we feel God does not remember us. Something that becomes clear in scripture is that each time God’s people wonders if God remembers them, the far greater challenge they face is their remembering Him. Let us continually turn our attentions to the everlasting love God offers. Turn your memories to Him, turn your past over to Him, even more importantly turn your future over to God.  Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit.
