Hello to you listening in Urbana, Illinois!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington thisis 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday.

In contemporary Buddhist practice (as popularized by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh), a gatha is a verse usually recited mentally in rhythm with the breath as part of one’s daily mindfulness practice.

For example, when you brush your teeth, just brush. Don’t process thoughts, anxieties or plans. Perhaps mentally recite this gatha:

"Brushing my teeth and rinsing my mouth,

I vow to speak purely and lovingly.

When my mouth is fragrant with right speech,

a flower blooms in the garden of my heart." [Plum Village]

Or, when you drink your coffee or your tea, feel the heat, smell the fragrance, savor the taste. Give your attention to your cup. You might enjoy mentally reciting this gatha:

"This cup of coffee or tea in my two hands,

mindfulness held perfectly.

My mind and body dwell in

the very here and now." [Plum Village]
