Tuesday was a heartbreaker for Democrats. Republican Glen Youngkin is the new governor of Virginia, and Republican Jack Ciattarelli came very close to unseating Democratic Governor Phil Murphy in New Jersey. Those are states that just a year ago, Joe Biden won by ten and 17 points respectively. Throughout America, Tuesday’s elections big and small seemed to point to a rejection of the president and at least some of his policies, and to troubles ahead for Democrats in next year’s mid-terms. Democrats, of course, can make a course correction, although what direction they should go in is a matter of debate within the party. Meanwhile, Republicans will still have to deal with the wild card that is Donald Trump and again, there’s disagreement over how much Tuesday tells us about running with, for, or against the former president.
