ACC CardiaCast: CardioNutrition—Why Findings From Prospective, Epidemiologic Cohort Studies are Important in Informing Dietary Recommendations

    13:31

Much of our dietary evidence comes from non-randomized epidemiologic data. In this episode, Robert Ostfeld, MD, MSc, FACC, and Walter Willett, MD, DrPH, discuss why findings from prospective, epidemiologic cohort studies are important in informing dietary recommendations, and what dietary principles are healthful across multiple populations, including the following key takeaways: Personal and planetary health are equally important for our own well-being and for that of future generations; a healthy, predominantly plant-based diet can achieve both of these goals. Although sustainable diets are necessary for planetary health, they are not sufficient; improvements in agricultural production, reduction in food waste, and rapid conversion to green energy are all needed. ACC CardiaCast: CardioNutrition—Getting Reimbursed for Nutrition Counseling

    8:34

In this episode, Robert Ostfeld, MD, MSc, FACC; Penny Kris-Etherton, PhD, RD; and Geeta Sikand, MA, RDN, CDE, CLS, discuss CardioNutrition on the front lines, including the following key takeaways: Registered dieticians (RDs) can bill for medical nutrition therapy for a number of conditions when patients are referred to RDs by a physician. The number of conditions RDs can bill for medical nutrition therapy would expand if the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act is passed into law. Physicians can incorporate their time spent counseling patients on nutrition into time-based billing. RDs and physicians working together can help optimize patient outcomes.
